“After the airline industry began requiring airlines to report their on-time rate, Speedee Airlines achieved the number one on-time rate, with more than 89 percent of its flights arriving on time each month. And now Speedee Airlines is offering more flights to more destination than ever before. Clearly, Speedee is the best choice for today’s business traveler.”
Response:
This argument claims that Speede Airlines is the best choice for business travelers. The basis for the conclusion drawn by the author is dependent upon on just two pieces of evidence, the ambiguity of which makes the conclusion incredibly broad.
First the author provides the results of a recent survey indicating that 89% of Speedee Airlines flights were on time, a best of the industry. However, there is nothing to indicate what the 89% of on time flights is based on. If Speedee only operated 100 flights whereas competitors operated 1,000 flights, then achieving an 89% on time rate is not as impressive as it would be for another airline and would not necessarily be an indication of the Speedee’s ability to operate efficiently. Secondly, the author indicated that as a result of the survey the airline will be offering more flights to more destinations than ever before. Again, we see a similar flaw as presented in the first piece of supporting evidence. Speedee is now offering more flights, but there is no indication as to how many flights were being offered before and how this may compare to the airline industry as a whole. If Speedee was preciously offering 25 flights to 25 destinations and is now offering 26 flights to 26 destinations that would not seem to indicate a big enough increase in options to become the best choice for business travelers.
Given the limited information we have on Speedee about how it compares with the airline industry, other than on-time rates, it would be hard to reach as broad a conclusion as the argument does to confidently state that Speedee is the best choice for business travelers.
