Question:
Some people believe that a college or university education should be available to all students. Others believe that higher education should be available only to good students.
Answer:
Many perspectives must be considered in order to decide which courses should be available to who. Some people think that university education must be widespread. Besides, there are some who believe that only outstanding students must pursue their studies on higher educations. In my own perspective, higher education must be available for only good students. I believe this for two concrete reasons. First, higher education requires people who love science. Second, by studying more and more, people's expectation grows.
To begin with, higher education is for the people who believe they like to research. In higher levels, people must investigate into different fields. They must believe that science is a key to solve their problems. Since studying and researching needs a lot of attention, if a person does not like the field, he is studying, he will become upset. Furthermore, educating the individuals who do not like to study, imposes a lot of expenditure for the government and the universities. For example, I remember that, when I was studying in Chicago University, there were some students, who didn't like to study in the major they were educating. The only thing I remember was they were just wasting the university resources. Besides, I thought that they were wasting the time of their own and the professors who were trying to teach them. This example demonstrated that education must not be available for all the people because our resources are getting wasted.
Secondly, it's obvious that by increasing the amount of education which a person gets, the expectation of his/her gets higher. We all know that the life expectation of a higher educated person such as a doctor or an engineer is different from a low educated person like a construction worker. The definition of the good and bad situation is far different in the eyes of these two groups. For instance, a nice house in the imagination of an engineer is a house which has all amenities of a luxury house and at least is 120 square meter. However, in the perspective of a construction worker, an appropriate house can be even 40 square meter with the least possible facilities. This simple example shows that if education will be available for everybody, the expectation of most of the society members will grow, and the government will get into the acute trouble for creating jobs, which are suitable for well-educated people.
To sum it up, in my personal view, higher education must not be available for everybody. Growing expectation of the educated people will cause a severe problem for the society. Moreover, higher education needs its own individuals who have a passion to learn and research.
