My take...................................
An article in the editorial section of a lifestyle and travel magazine has claimed that Davidson County is ready to take up the mantle of "culinary capital of the state". In promoting this view, the article has put forward some questionable reasoning, which makes it hard for anybody reading the article to agree with it.
Firstly, the author of the article has pointed out that opening of 20 new restaurants in the Davidson County is a signal of resurgence of the county as culinary capital. The article fails to address the fact that this number of openings is not a generic trend. If the article had established that these openings are an exception to previous years, then more credence would be given to conclusion arrived by author. Maybe, more than 20 restaurants closed down and there is a general downturn in the restaurant business. However, this angle has not been sufficiently addressed.
Secondly, The county college system has announced an expansion to its culinary arts program. If the graduates of this program are leaving the Davidson County to work in restaurant businesses in other county, then, there is no effect of this program on emergence of culinary scene in Davidson County. However, if it can be sufficiently established that more and more graduates of this program, as per trends in previous years, have contributed to the culinary scene of Davidson county, then, this reasoning would give more credence to the article's conclusion.
Thirdly, it has been claimed that residents of neighbouring Roth County would be turning to restaurants in davidson county as one third of the restaurants in Roth county have gone out of business. Maybe, the restaurants went out of business because of insufficient footfall. Hence, in that case, potential customers cannot be expected from the Roth County. However, if the article successfully establishes that the reasons for closure of restaurant businesses were not due to lack of footfall, but because of say regulatory reasons, or safety reasons, etc,. then, the claim would be bolstered.
If the author addresses the above listed flaws sufficiently, and incorporates some of the suggestions noted against the flaws, then the argument would become robust. The article would accomplish its task of swaying its readers more effectively, Presence of sound reasoning will help remove any doubts that might come to a reader as they did to us.
