Amoghzz
Hi,
I am from India and am working with Infosys Limited for the past 3.5 years in purely technical roles.
I appeared for GMAT last year and scored 740(V39,Q50).
I am a Mechanical Engineer with 7.84/10 CGPA from a tier 2 university and was a member of organizing committees for multiple events including a national level sports fest.
For a couple of years I was also a volunteer for a local NGO in my university region that looked after the needs of orphan children.
During the 3+ years of work experience, I have only worked on implementation projects and in 3 different roles - back end developer, integration developer and front end developer. I have worked with clients from Manufacturing, Consulting and Utilities sectors.
I was selected to be a part of the coveted Self Governance Team(SGT) during the training period at Infosys (10 selected out of 450). The SGT was basically a bridge between the management and the trainees.
I also received insta-award for my work efforts during the first quarter of the last financial year.
My post MBA goal is to get into consulting, specifically strategy and tech consulting.
I recently completed a virtual strategy internship by BCG to gain some insight into the industry. I am also looking to complete a tech consulting internship to get acquainted in that front as well.
I have started learning Spanish a couple of months back and hopefully would have a good grasp on the language by the time sessions start next year.
Please suggest 7-8 colleges that I can apply to in the US and Europe. I am also thinking of applying to NUS.
Also, what can I do from this point onwards to improve my profile a bit for the admissions teams?
Thanks,
Amogh
Here are my thoughts:
- GPA: I'm not as familiar with how the scale translates to the US 4.0 scale, but your's appears a bit lower from the little familiarity that I have. Since you're only 3.5 years away from undergrad, it still holds a decent amount of weight, unlike for older candidates
- GMAT: you're at the baseline of what's on par with Engineers from India who apply to the Top 15-20 schools. If/where you land will depend on the rest of the application.
- Extracurriculars: do you have community involvement in the past few years since undergrad? You should try to take on a leadership or even board position for an org that you're passionate about, not just being a volunteer. This is going to be critical for your story and potential differentiation. Learning Spanish is fine, but doesn't optimize the value of your story.
- Work Experience: looks fairly standard experience-wise for an engineer. Definitely highlight those accolades. And make sure to not only share that you were selected for that team, but also display the impact you made while on it. Assuming many engineers who are highly qualified for top schools also get awards and make decent impact, your WE and GMAT looks like most candidates of your competitive set. So now you need differentiation with your story, otherwise it's a run-of-the-mill application that adcoms at top schools "easily" reject, since they see hundreds, if not thousands, of high-GMAT engineers from India or China just like you.
- Goals: You're going to need a compelling story here since 30-50% of applicants want to get an MBA to be a consultant. And it's even more heavily skewed that way for international students.
Since you're only 3.5 years out of undergrad, you still got 2-3 years to apply if you choose to do so. Your profile as displayed above doesn't look "ready" or different just yet, unless you can craft a convincing story or have a true passion. Can you get a leadership position for a community organization that you're passionate about? Could you not just get a promotion, but also make a shift to a different function (e.g. finance, marketing, etc.) to be more well rounded? Or maybe have an entrepreneurial experience?
The range of schools for you could vary a lot based on execution. With the given profile as is, your schools could range significantly from Ross/Fuqua down to Emory or Georgetown. You'll need to have a meaningful and purposeful story that's positioned well with clear differentiation and impact to have a chance at Ross and Fuqua.
