I am planning to apply in the coming first round. My question is, if I get a PMP certification now, would it help in my applications? Or it could give off an impression as if I did it solely with a purpose of applications?

Holding PMP certification under your belt will definitely help you and put you one step ahead of others who doesn't hold it.

You should get the certification if you need it for your job - no matter what the timing. If you are doing it solely for the purpose of the application, then I would not recommend it as it doesnt add any direct value. Most applicants apply without a PMP certification and get B-school admission. Also, very few go into project manager roles post MBA.
So, think of what qualifications will help you for your career goal and take that path. If the PMP certification will help you better as compared to an MBA, then you don't have to apply for an MBA at all.
