Poikilotherms can subsist in what would be fatally food-depleted environments; they expend over 70% less energy than homeotherms per pound of body weight which allowed them to survive on far less food.
A) weight which allowed
B) weight, which allows
C)weight which has allowed
D)weight that has been allowing
E) weight allowing
Note: B is the correct answer. though i cant make sense of how B could be the right answer. "which"refers to body weight-definitely body weight is not what is allowing them to survive on far less food. E looks to be the closest answer, but it is missing a comma. So, to me all the answer choices seem incorrect.
Kindly comment.

Indeed my friend, you have a point here.
"which" modifies the preciding noun (with some rare exception) as you say, but even if B is correct the sentence is logically flawed "they expend over 70% less energy than homeotherms per pound of body weight, which (body weight) allows them to survive on far less food. "
The body weight allows them to survive... not so sure: their metabolism allows them to survive.(logic problem)
IMO there is no right answer here.
A C D have wrong verb tenses, in E allowing (ING form not preceed by a comma) modifies the weight and is clearly wrong.
Do not pay attention to this question, my 2 cents

I completely agree with you, 12bhang. I would say, this question source, whatever it may be, is not reliable. This is a very poorly designed question by someone who doesn't understand the GMAT SC. (Whoever wrote the question does know a good deal about biology!)
