5-12-13 triangle, right? Nope.
In a 5-12-13, the hypotenuse is 13. In this case, the longer leg is 13.
Okay, so how long is the hypotenuse? If you feel compelled to do Pythagorean Theorem, please stop it. The hypotenuse is really close to 14. All we did to change from a 5-12-13 triangle to what we have is that we moved point X 1 mile to the west. That can't have really change XZ by much more than 1. Why on earth would you do the math to find the exact value. 14.
XY+YZ = 13+5 = 18

Asked: If a person walks from X to Y, and then from Y to Z, approximately how many miles longer would that person walk than a person who walks directly from X to Z ?
XY = 13 miles
YZ = 5 miles
XZ = 14 miles approx
Difference between the 2 paths = (XY+YZ) - XZ = (13+5) - 14 = 18 - 14 = 4 miles
