B. abide by and protect the law as well as represent consideration and justice, ----- and as well as is not parallel. Wrong

C. abide by and protect the law, and represent consideration as well as justice – the same as in C

Police officers should abide and protect the law, and represent justice and consideration.

There are two things police officers should do

1) abide and protect law
2) represent justice and consideration

abide is incorrect as it distorts the meaning in this sentence it means to abide means to follow abide by means act in accordance to hence eliminate options A and E. In between B, and C the additive phrase as well as is incorrect and should not be used. IMO D

A. abide and protect the law, and represent justice and consideration

B. abide by and protect the law as well as represent consideration and justice

C. abide by and protect the law, and represent consideration as well as justice

D. abide by and protect the law, and represent consideration and justice

E. abide and protect the law while representing justice and consideration

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

Police officers should abide and protect the law, and represent justice and consideration.

A. abide and protect the law, and represent justice and consideration

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect. The verb abide requires a preposition in order to logically connect to the law. Police officers should abide by the law.

What helps us identify this question as a Split Construction question and identify the mistake is the following Stop Sign: A split construction: Verb A + and/or + Verb B + object

B. abide by and protect the law as well as represent consideration and justice

Although this answer choice corrects the original Split Construction error by adding the required preposition by after the verb abide, using as well as instead of and is redundant.

What helps us identify this mistake is the following Stop Sign: as well as

C. abide by and protect the law, and represent consideration as well as justice

Although this answer choice corrects the original Split Construction error by adding the required preposition by after the verb abide, using as well as instead of and is redundant.

What helps us identify this mistake is the following Stop Sign: as well as

D. abide by and protect the law, and represent consideration and justice

This answer choice corrects the original Split Construction error by adding the required preposition by after the verb abide.

E. abide and protect the law while representing justice and consideration

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect and repeats the original Split Construction error. The verb abide requires a preposition in order to logically connect to the law. Police officers should abide by the law.

What helps us identify this question as a Split Construction question and identify the mistake is the following Stop Sign: A split construction: Verb A + and/or + Verb B + object

Hi @VeritaKarishma, isn't it compulsory that when we use comma-and, we need to repeat the subject after and? This is one reason I was inclined towards B rather than D. Please help.

Hello all! I'm aware of the rule about "abide by". However, I'm unable to understand why the inclusion of "as well as" in the answer choices B and C makes these wrong. From what I know, "as well as" and "and" can be used interchangeably. That's why I'm failing to grasp the explanations as well. Please help!
