Hello,
My Online GMAT was scheduled for Oct 11 at 10:30 AM. I had completed my pre-exam formalities well in time and was waiting for the examination to start. The scheduled time came and passed by but nothing happened on the onVUE application. I waited for half hour before doing anything else (given the fact that there is a very strict instruction that says that you should not open any other application while the onVUE application is running).
Given it was a Sunday, I knew there was no point in calling the customer care number. I went onto their website through which I could reach out to their agents through the chat box. It took more than 40 mins for an agent to cater to me. While this agent and I were still chatting the Proctor suddenly came online on the onVUE application (I had kept it on all this while), saying he has released the paper and I could start. Completely out of the blue, he just said this and expected me to start giving my examination.
By this time 90 mins had already passed, and I had completely lost my focus. I hadn't yet started my paper and I requested him to reschedule the paper. To which he says that I should have told him this earlier and now since he has released the paper he does not have the authority to reschedule it. He urged me to give the exam. To quote him 'its best you take the exam now'. Given less than reasonable examination experience I refused to do so and politely asked him to reschedule it. It is to be noted that he mentioned that the delay happened at their end.
He said the only way forward is for him to revoke the exam and provide me with a case ticket id, which I can then use to negotiate with the customer services. Now I had no idea then what it meant and I agreed to it with an understanding that one can expect a speedy resolution. After going through several posts here I have realised it may not be so - just read that someone had to wait for 13 days for their matter to be resolved.
I called the customer care today and they mentioned that they will take the minimum 3 days to revert on the case id. I tried making my point that the I am targeting B School application deadlines as close as 31st October. They still insisted that nothing can happen before that.
Now, I am wondering if I should have simply gone ahead and given the examination.
Takeaways -
1. It is not uncommon for issues to happen when appearing for GMAT Online
2. Customer care services for GMAT are as bad as any. A min 3 day issue resolution, imo, does not work when you are looking to offer examination slots every 15 mins for the Online GMAT. Especially for the fee they are charging
3. If you can, maybe appear for the exam at the centre which would ensure a much smoother experience
Update as of 10/20 -
1. It took me 7 days to negotiate with them, but finally they have allowed me to reschedule. Since I am facing a deadline I have decided to take an in person center based exam. They are willing to refund the amount for first GMAT Online attempt. Phew!
