Just received an email re: essay questions. They are exactly the same as last year.

The big news about essay questions for application to the Class of 2016 is that there is no news. Last year, we reduced the number of essays from four to three, and increased the suggested word count in one of the essays. This worked really well, so essay questions are remaining the same as last year.

Bigger changes are taking place in the Letters of Reference requirements. We are streamlining the questions we ask your recommenders—merging two questions on the professional recommendation, and making the last peer question optional. We honed our questions to garner the most essential information needed to evaluate your application. This way, we ask only for what we need and your recommenders’ time is well spent.

One other small change to the application: Last year we added a “Just for Fun” question that asked what your favorite food is. We found this made the admission readers hungry, so this year we’re asking what your favorite place is instead.

How are people organizing their b-school process for essays, etc? Organization is not my forte, but I know I'm going to be a disaster if I don't put in the work now.

I'm using One Note to notes on b schools, etc. I'm aiming for Round 1.

Just read. Same essays huh!? Well, this means that a lot of analysis/literature on how to approach them is already available.

Does "in the last three years" mean 365*3 days ago or any time between 2010-2013.

Hey all,

I'll be attending the GSB next year (class of 2015). When I was applying I didn't know any current students so I had a tough time getting a sense of the day to day experience at the GSB. There wasn't much information out there other than the official stuff on the website. So, to help the next generation of applicants, I have started a blog to share my experiences before/during my two years at the GSB so that everyone can get an insider's view (well, a soon-to-be insider). I can't post URLs here, but my blog is backinthebay2015 DOT wordpress DOT com. If there's anything specific you want me to post about leave a comment on the blog and I'll see what I can do.

Has anyone started working the essays yet? Just feel like I keep hitting my head against a wall. Not that they're terribly unique, I just feel like they're looking for some subtle nuances that others essays I've worked on don't.

You mean "financial security and upward mobility" might not be what they want? Dang.

Yea I feel like its going to be a struggle to walk the line of being genuine while also trying to appeal to admissions.

Nah, financial and job security are rarely what REALLY matters to a person, deep down. But I'm worried that if I dig deep and find out what really matters to me, it could be some personality trait that they don't like. For example, what if the answer is "so that everyone around me would approve of me", or "to spend time with my kids 24/7", or "I never want to fail". These might very well be what matters to certain people, but wouldn't convey the right msg - the first one would show deep down the person has no confidence, second one would show you probably won't go out and make impact in society, and third one would show... i don't know, not willing to take risk or something.

So, my questions is, if there's a conflict between what we think is the fundamental driving force of our actions and what we believe others would think of it, what do we do?
