Hi All,

It looks like everyone's correctly solved this problem, so I won't rehash any of that work here. Instead, I want to point out a traditional 'shortcut' that tends to be built into these types of Chart/Graph/Table questions in the Quant section....

Whenever these types of questions show up, you should expect to spend a bit more time (than normal) to deal with it, since you have to process the information in the table. However, the designers can't give you a question that is too lengthy or complex because then you'd never have the time to properly answer it and get through the rest of the section. As such, there is almost certain to be a built-in pattern in the data. Your ability to quickly find that pattern will make solving the problem relatively easier.

Here, the pattern is in the differences between each consecutive level in the table...

From 10% to 35%, the fee difference is 25%
From 35% to 50%, the fee difference is 15%
From 50% to 65%, the fee difference is 15%
From 65% to 100%, the fee difference is 35%

Notice how there are TWO points at which the difference is exactly 15%. That is NOT a coincidence. Consider the rest of the work that goes into solving this problem and how much of that work you can actually AVOID once you recognize this pattern. That shortcut was put there by the writer(s) to save you some time.

595 is 35% of 1700. We are in the 45-31 day window. It can be any day during that window. Not sufficient.

St2: If the trip had been canceled one day later, the cancellation fee would have been $255 more.

Not sufficient. We don't know $255 more than what?

St1 + St2: So, if the cancellation was 1 day later, total fee = 595 + 255 = 850 which is 50% of 1700. We are in the 30-16 day window. However, this is a "would have been" scenario which means the cancellation was exactly 30 days earlier than September 4. Sufficient.

Answer (C).

15% difference is from 31st to 30th day and from 16th to 15th day, so the trip was canceled either 31 or 16 days prior to 4th of September

Since there are two possibilities that may cause in an increase of $255 (31 days and 16 days prior to the departure), we cannot determine the exact date on which the trip was cancelled.

Statement two alone is not sufficient to answer the question. Eliminate answer choice B.

Statements One and Two Together:

Using statements one and two, we know that the trip was canceled between 31 and 45 days (inclusive) before September 4 and that had the trip been canceled one day later, the fee would have been $255 more. From this information, we can determine that the trip was canceled 31 days before September 4, because had it been canceled 30 days before the trip, the fee would have been $1,700 x 0.5 = $850, which is $255 more than the fee of $595.

Since we know that the trip was canceled 31 days before the trip, we can determine the exact date on which it was canceled.

hense, if we cannot get to an answer that is a singular day in the week (sunday - saturday), the answer should be E.

Iv'e seen GMAT questions that use that logic.

While it's understandable to interpret "on what day" as referring to a day of the week (Sunday - Saturday), in the context of this question, "day" can also mean a specific date, such as May 1st or September 3rd. Therefore, the question is asking for the exact date the trip was canceled, not just the day of the week. Also, note that this is an official question, so its wording is as good as it gets.

I think we can solve this question with minimal calculation

(1) Each cancellation window covers a range of days. If we only know the cancellation fee, then we know the range of possible cancellation days but not the exact day. So, (1) is insufficient.

(2) Since the fee increases if the cancellation occurs just one day later, the cancellation day must be at the upper bound of an interval.
255 is 15% of 1700.

So there are two possible intervals:

(45–31 days) vs. (30–16 days): 50% – 35% = 15%

(30–16 days) vs. (15–5 days): 65% – 50% = 15%

Then (2) alone is insufficient.

Combining (1) and (2): Together, we can determine the exact cancellation day.
