Area of medium square = 4*2 = 8
Area of large square = 8*2 = 16
Area of small square = 4
Area of medium square = 4*2 = 8
Area of large square = 8*2 = 16

OFFICIAL SOLUTION:
(E) If the area of the smallest square is equal to 4, then the area of the middle square must be twice as large, or equal to 8 square units. Finally, the largest square must have an area of twice the area of the middle square. So the area of the largest square equals 16 units, or the answer choice (E).
