EMPOWERgmatRichC Thank you for your response and your previous analysis of my ESR. I have purchased ESR but since I took the test today, it is not available yet.
1) I am planning to apply to INSEAD MBA, HEC MBA and LBS Master in Finance Full-time. I would have liked to apply to second round of applications but with this GMAT score I won't make it. I will most likely apply to final rounds of each program. For LBS specifically, I need a high score to balance my application.
Once I have my ESR I will share it.

Thank you.

Hi Rookie282b,

Since you are interested in some highly-competitive Schools, you would likely find it beneficial to speak with an Admissions Expert about your overall profile and plans. Those Experts should be able to answer your Admissions questions and help define the specific areas of your profile that could use some improvement (and the more time that you have to act on that advice, the better). There's a Forum full of those Experts here:

https://gmatclub.com/forum/ask-admissio ... tants-124/

Once you have your ESR, we can discuss all of this in more detail.

Any ideas or suspicions why such a discrepancy between the practice test and your official test scores?

The official scores look mindlessly consistent. Completely perfect if you ask me but not good….

These are also huge differences and consistent test scores matchless consistent practice scores.

The usual suspects:

1. Have you attempted any of the questions on your practice test before? Have you run into any of the questions on GMAT Club for example?

2. Did you experience issues with timing on the real GMAT?

3. Do you take your practice tests differently or have a habit of looking up answers after each question?

4. Anything else can explain this consistency? 😱

This is 3rd time I am taking the GMAT. The first two times I self-studied. The first time I prepared with GMAT official guide only. The second time I prepared with Manhattan Prep Quant book. And this time I prepared with Target Test Prep (TTP).

1st GMAT (2021) score: 650 V35 Q44
2nd GMAT (2022) score: 640 V38 Q41
3rd GMAT (2023) score: 660 V38 Q42

For this third time I have been studying for 6 months. On average spending 10 hours per week, and taking Official GMAT practice tests every Sunday. Below you can see my score for the GMAT practice test:

Practice Test #4: 740 V41 Q49
Practice Test #6: 680 V34 Q49 (Ran out of time and didn't do 6 verbal questions)
Practice Test #2: 710 V40 Q48
Practice Test #3: 620 V31 Q44 (didn't sleep the night before + neighbour was making a lot of noise during the exam)
Practice Test #1: 760 V45 Q49
Practice Test #5: 750 V42 Q50

Most of my scores are above 700. Before my second GMAT attempt, my practice test scores were around 750 as well. (You can see in my previous post: https://gmatclub.com/forum/720-and-750- ... 90587.html)

I am trying to identify what might be the reason that my actual GMAT score doesn't improve. All the practice tests were done in exactly the same conditions as the test, at the same time as my actual test. There was no noise in the test center and I arrived to the test center early and I was calm. I even took 3 days off from work before the exam and I rested. My goal is to get above 720 in my actual GMAT so any help would be very much appreciated!

Thank you.

Thank you for your response bb! To answer your questions:
1) Yes I did encounter some repeat questions, for example in the practice test where I got 760, there were 5 verbal repeat questions and 2 Quant repeat questions, even though I had seen them before, I spent around the 1:30 - 2 minutes on them just to make sure I don't get a time advantage. But even with repeat questions, I didn't expect the real score to be 100 points lower than my practice score.
2) I did run out of time a bit at the end of verbal and quant, I had to rush at the end.
3) I took practice tests in the same conditions as real exam, started at the same time, allowed myself same 8 minute breaks and didn't do anything differently.
4) I am an anxious person, but I dont think anxiety explains this difference. I know that I got really long RC and CR in the real exam (whereas in practice tests they weren't that long), and I got much more DS in real exam than I did in practice exams. I also know that in the practice exams where I scored 750 or above, I had a very clear mind, and the other practice exams as well as the real exam I felt foggy...But I was well rested and didn't feel tired or burnt out so I think it might be just confidence/anxiety that caused it.

Thank you so much ScottTargetTestPrep for your response. I have been studying TTP over the past 6 months and really loving it. I felt very aware of my weaknesses and strengths because of the way the program is organized, I also had a private tutor with TTP who really helped me eliminate bad habits. I read the article you share and I think 3 pitfalls seem to be my case:

#5 Over investing in the first 10 questions: I just got the ESR and it does look like the first 10 questions of Quant were Hard so perhaps I should have guessed and moved on.

#6 Pressure: this is definitely the case for me as I am naturally an anxious person, and even though I felt calm, I think ultimately I was worried about the outcome.

#9 Falling back on old habits: Because of the stress, I think I fell back on old habits. My notes were not very organized and clear and sometimes I had to re-read some sentences several times. In one question, I even noticed that I was answering the wrong question after I looked at the question again.
