This is what I did.
A $200 investment at x percent per annum and a $500 investment at y percent per annum have a combined yearly return of 10 percent of the total of the two investments.

Possible values of x and y are 5 and 12 (5 less than 10 and 2 more than 10). Other values are also possible but they will be in decimals. Let's look at other info first before considering other values.
If $400 is invested at x percent and $600 is invested at y percent per annum to give a combined yearly return of 9.2 percent of the total of the two investments,

If y is 12, then the distance of 2 becomes 12 - 9.2 = 2.8. Hence the distance of 3 must be 4.2.
9.2 - 4.2 will give 5.
The values match up. x must be 5 and y must be 12.
If equal amounts are invested at the two rates, overall rate will simply be the average of the two rates = (5+12)/2 = 8.5%
