Alright so this is my take on the Kellogg app process. Not that my advice means a whole lot but here is what worked for me on my app. I will be of as much help as I can but even without essays to work on my life is extremely busy at the moment. Thanks to not having to worry about essays I can actually relax enough to be of some help to others, since my brain wont be overloaded.
Essay 1 they specifically ask about career progress, which is a different way of posing the questions so make sure you answer it. I went to a very odd school, so I started with my reason for choosing it over a better known engineering school. Then talked about why I accepted my job out of college, then two years later switched job functions, and finally getting promoted to a level with a lot more responsibility. Transitioned that into why I need an MBA. I talked about my views on my desired field and how it can make the world a better place, while acknowledging the drawbacks of it.
Finally and most importantly the why Kellogg part, you really need to sell this and show you learned about the school. I mentioned what I had done to learn about their school (this is where you talk about visits, events, alums, students…all that stuff). Talked about the majors I want to pursue…remember at Kellogg due to the flexible nature of the program you are going to do more than just one major. I went through the course book and found some very interesting and unique electives that I said I was looking forward to taking…ended it with clubs that meet my goals.
Essay 2: Obviously this is going to be different for everyone since its about what makes you unique. I talked about how my strange undergrad and work experience though it was out there would be an advantage…lots about how it gave me a great view on not only leadership but also TEAMWORK. Through in something memorable. Also work in some more why Kellogg stuff, you are unique but that is going to benefit them and also you.
Essay 3: More about how my unique experiences gave me a different view of Leadership. I also worked in about more WHY I need an MBA, but still showed that I was already a fairly capable leader. How I planned to gain more leadership experience at Kellogg.
Essay 4: I did a difficult relationship due to generational differences. Then for the outside of work I wrote about one subject since its short and went into details.
I think my stories were what really worked, find interesting materials to capture the interest. Also every single essay should have something about why Kellogg and why an MBA. With so many essays there is a lot of room to fit in a huge amount of material that really makes them see you FIT. They are huge on fit from everything I have heard so you really need to come across as someone who belongs there because its right for you not because its #x in whatever ranking.
Also they are very big on the global market place, if you have international experience get that in there clearly. We all know teamwork is important there so you definitely need to get that you are not just a leader but also a team player.
