How Exactly Should I Be Scoring? 16 Jul 2010, 18:15

This is not a question of what my GMAT score should be, instead it is a question as to how I should be scoring in my practice questions. For example, I am early in my study, so out of a possible 15 questions in a particular subject (lets say mixed Critical Reasoning questions ranging from the early to late numbered questions in the OG 12) what percentage should I be looking for in terms of correct answers.

I understand 100% would be ideal, but what is a realistic goal for someone who plans to study over a good period of time? I understand at this point I am not getting enough questions right, but I want to know if I am on a good track.

Everyone seems to ask this question when they first start out (don't worry, I did the exact same thing!)

Honestly there's just no good answer. Use the practice questions (like in OG12) for practice, not for scoring. Focus on the concepts rather than your percentages.

With that being said, I do have a spreadsheet where I've tracked the accuracy of every question I've ever done. I don't use this to gauge myself against a possible score -- I use it to see where I need to improve.

Do you keep a record of all questions you have done in any material you have, or do you only keep a record of only the OG problems?

I keep a record of all printed material I have done. I'll attach my spreadsheet so you can get an idea of what I've been doing

By the way -- I think it's important to note that you should complete practice problems in a timed environment. I limit myself to 2 minutes for quant and 1.75 minutes for verbal. After the time is up, I force myself to put down an answer and move on.

It's important that you keep strict time so you can see your true improvement in a test-like condition
