PS Butler Question for the Day

When positive integer x is divided by 3, the remainder is 1 and when positive integer y is divided by 5, the remainder is 1. If x + y is divisible by 5, what is the least possible value of y ?

A. 1
B. 6
C. 7
D. 11
E. 13

Difficulty: Medium | Source: GMAT Club Tests
b
Would you mind sharing your working ?

Here is mine -

x = 3*q + 1

y= 5*p + 1

Here p & q are quotients.

x + y = 3q + 5p + 2

We know x + y is divisible by 5

5q will be divisible by 5, so 3q when divided by 5 should leave a remainder 3 for the condition to hold true.

Its given that y is positive number, so even if p is 0, the equation holds true.

I think the answer is A :)

DS Question for the day

A = { root(n), n, n^2 }

If n is a nonnegative number, is the median and the average (arithmetic mean) of list A equal ?

(1) root(n)= n

(2) root(n)/3 + n/3 + n^2/3 - n = 0

I think the answer to this is D , what about others ?

Hope you had a Halloween filled with tricks and treats.

Speaking of a list of scary Quant topics, I think Inequalities and Absolute value tops the list for many :D, so here is the topic of the day to master the fear of inequalities

In reedeem column I can see I can reedeem 60 points for GMATCLUB test for 2 weeks ,Does this 2 weeks come up with Pro pack also OR only standard pack of GMATCLUB TEST ?

@BB @BEUNUEL @CHETAN2U @CHETAN4U
I think the standard GMAT Club Test that can be redeemed for 60 points. GMAT Club Tests [Pro] can be redeemed for 90 points. The validity is 2 weeks for both. I will however let bb correct me if I am wrong here.

Is it D ?
Its given that x < 12, and we have to find out which of the following MUST be true given that x < 12

D states that x < 8 (i.e. x must be less than 8)

Does this always have to be true ?

Well no ! Say x = 11. x < 12; but x is not less than 8

B. Statement (1) is insufficient because the question is about ‘2x’ and ‘3y’ but statement (1) reverses these coefficients of x and y - ‘3x’ and ‘2y’.

However if statement (1) were 2x-3y = 10, then it would be sufficient.

B. 1

D. 3
E. 4

D ?
We need to find the distance between 2x and 3y on a number line.

Statement 1 gives us the distance between 3x and 2y.Statement 1 at max gives us the information that 3x lies 10 units right to 2y when plotted on a number line.

However we cannot conclude the distance between 2x and 3y.

Hence Statement 1 is not sufficient :(

PS Butler Question - Nov 1

DS Question of the day

X is a three-digit positive integer in which each digit is either 1 or 2. Y has the same digits as X, but in reverse order. What is the remainder when X is divided by 3?

(1) The hundreds digit of XY is 6.
(2) The tens digit of XY is 4.

My thoughts : The question may seem tricky at first, but if you get the right way to deal with it, the question becomes a bit easy :)
