Sdc29, am I correct in assuming that the four "official practice papers" are the computer-adaptive GMATPrep exams? Had you taken any of them before, or were you doing the four GMATPrep tests for the first time when you scored 44, 44, 47, and 42?

There could be a bunch of things going on here, but my hunch is that you might be a little bit inconsistent with your time management or you might be a little bit sloppy in general. On an adaptive test, careless errors are an absolute killer -- if you miss a couple of "getable" questions early in the section, you'll put yourself into a hole that you might never climb out of, since your score is based primarily on the difficulty level of the questions, not necessarily on the number of questions you answer correctly. If you miss even one or two easy questions, you'll see more easy questions, and your margin for error can evaporate awfully quickly. I would wager that when you scored the 42, you missed a bunch of questions that made you yell, "How the %*#)!*%&!%*! did I miss THAT one?!?" at your computer screen when you reviewed the test afterward, and that's what did the bulk of the damage.

Again, there could be something else going on, but try going through all of your tests, and count the number of questions that you could reasonably classify as "careless" or "avoidable" mistakes. If the math was over your head or if you didn't understand the phrasing of the question, that's a different thing entirely. For now, just figure out how many questions looked like boneheaded errors. If you're making silly mistakes, you're much more likely to see crazy fluctuations in your score from test to test, and that's a sign that you need to really concentrate on rechecking your work and reading the questions extra-carefully before you jump into the math.

Of course, only two of your seven tests seem to stick out. So I might be barking up the wrong tree here. But at the very least, it won't hurt to take a closer look to see if sloppiness is costing you points.

Good luck with everything!

Thank you! Very helpful feedback.

I did go through the 42 test and noticed a few silly errors but moreover I got 7 questions in a row wrong - not sure how?! - but the algorithm must have massively penalised me for that.

Focus less on the scoring in practice -- more important to learn from any mistakes you make--especially any "stupid" mistakes you may have made. Being extra careful on the actual test can make a difference. You can also take another practice test here: www.gmatpill.com/gmat-practice-test/practice-test - again focus on learning from mistakes.

frankly i have weird results

from gmat prep tool (the official gmat software)
first test:

17 mistakes in quant (i felt the questions were really hard) and got 49
12 mistakes in verbal and got 39
overall score 720

second test :
7 mistakes in quant but got the same 49 (although questions were easier)
11 mistake in verbal and got 34 only
overall score 680

i know it is not only about the number of questions but come on how can i get 49 with 17 wrong answers on the first test ?isnt that too high a score?

Elitherare, the quant score is definitely odd, but it's certainly possible on the GMAT, and probably isn't a sign of a software glitch in this case. One of my students missed 6 questions on the quant section of the GMATPrep and still got a 51, and another student missed 21 quant questions and still earned a 44. Sure, your score of 49 with 17 wrong answers is pretty extreme, but it's definitely not alone in the GMATPrep Oddity Hall of Fame.

Think of it this way: the test is (very, very roughly) trying to find the level of question at which you get half of the questions right, and half of them wrong. Throw in a little bit of randomness (if you're due for a "49-level" geometry question but a "51-level" question is the closest thing available, you'll get slammed by a tougher question than you "deserve"), and it's not all that shocking that you might miss 17 of 37 questions and still get a 49. It just means that you missed some really spectacularly hard questions, and probably had a little bit of odd luck in terms of the questions you saw on the test.

But those 49s look pretty darned good, regardless of how many questions you missed! :)

What's considered a very good quant score (for the top 10 schools) ?
