On the way, I will send you more details later, need to go out soon. But this is what is in Miriam-Webster dictionary and I found some other details on a website. I will try to get that and will post.

Ontheway, this should help:

Some words may look plural in form (end in s) but are singular in sense. Use a singular verb in these instances. Examples: The news is not good. Physics is a a challenging subject. This can be tricky. For instance, statistics is a singular noun when it refers to the field of statistics but a plural noun when it refers to a bunch of numbers: Statistics involves (singular) the study of numerical relationships. Statistics show (plural) that the Democrats may win the next election.

So MGMAT is correct, but in this sentence statistics (probably from surveys, calls to people etc) show Americans, not used as a field of science. Did that help?

Praise for Johny Starstruck and his entourage are common, although statistics show Americans still associate his name with the ritualistic murders.

(A) are common, although statistics show Americans still associate his name with
(B) are common, although statistics shows Americans still associate his name with
(C) are common, although statistics show Americans still associate his name to
(D) is common, although statistics show Americans still associate his name with
(E) is common, although statistics shows Americans still associate his name to

Be careful, there is big trap in this question :)
Don't forget to explain your answers.

D. Certainly a big trap but go for D for correct idiom "associated with".

imo, "statistics" can be plural or singular depending where and how it is used. "statistics" as a subject should be singular where as it as data should be plural.

but i take D for the correct idiom "associated with x" not "associated to x".

D. 'Praise' requires 'is' and correct idiom is 'associate x with y'. Leaves only D.
