I think the answer to this is C as well. It is wordy but it is the only one that is correct. B is comparing the amount to the candidate.. no?

Later I compared both B & C. My explanation why C is not right is below

C)an amount greater than  the amount  any other candidate raised -  the amount  can be omitted as it implies the first one - an amount greater than (the amount) any other candidate raised.

1. This is a comparison between what Obama raised and what any other candidate raised. ; So A and D that compare the amount with person are gone.

2. The use of ‘which’ flouts touch rule in D and E. This pitfall is sidelined in A,B and C , by using an appositive modifier, namely, ‘the amount’ which can stand for or define or represent any other noun or theme in the previous part, in this case, the $745M.

3. Between B and C that survive, C can be accused of redundancy of the word ‘the amount’, while in B the amount is elliptical; This ellipsis is perfectly acceptable since, the word ‘the amount’ is already existing verbatim in the first part of the sentence.

So B wins

My Explanation is this-

A- Here amount is compared to the candidate which is wrong
B- Seems to be ok
C-Wordy and the word amount is redundant in a way
D- Comparison is made to the candidate. Similar to A
E- Erroneous construction 'which was greater than any other candidate raised'

I do not follow any logic for using ellipsis, other than my intuition; Only thing I know is that before you want to use an ellipsis, you must really have the elliptical phrase or word somewhere in the previous part verbatim.

I don't think we need "that" here since we don't want to repeat the "amount" at the beginning.
 "an amount greater than (the amount) any other candidate raised".

But "that" is definitely something I always keep an eye out for though.

I am answering this in response to a pm. This is a poor question that falls short of GMAT SC ideals on many fronts. Of these answers, (B) is the best, although far from ideal. (B) does logically complete the comparison, via the implicit direct object of the verb "raised", but this is not typically the way the GMAT would phrase it. A more typical GMAT phrasing might be something like " an amount greater than that raised by any other candidate ." Even the phrasing using the word "amount" is awkward ---- (this is why (C) is an abomination!)--- I would argue an even better sentence would be: President Obama raised $745M for his 2008 presidential campaign, more than that of any other candidate . That sound like a GMAT sentence! The quality of GMAT SC questions vary enormously across different sources. all of us know that b , the oa , is somewhat strange but we do not know why.

study the ellipsis in the oa in og books to find out. this is the best way but it costs a lot of time and should be leaft for prep company

- the cut off part must be present in the previous part. 
- the kept part must be parallel with the a part in the prevous phrase or the latter part must be clear.

I think this discussion is beyond the gmat land for sc. gmat will never make us analyse there things. gmat sc just test the basic logic based on basic grammar.
