Hi RahulJain293,

We last discussed your studies a little over 4 months ago. At that time, you were planning on taking the Official GMAT in January. Did you end up taking the GMAT as planned (and if you did, then how did you score?)?

The scoring algorithm on the Official GMAT is far more complicated than most people realize. Since that algorithm is proprietary, no GMAT company has an exact match for it, thus CAT scores can vary a bit based on the 'biases' involved in their respective designs. The most realistic CATs available are the 6 from GMAC (the 2 free CATs, and each of the 2 that come with Exam Pack 1 and Exam Pack 2), so if you have not taken any of those CATs/mocks yet, then you should plan to take one of those next. If this recent CAT was the first one that you've taken during your studies, then it's tough to say how well it actually defines your current 'ability level.' With a Score Goal of 700+, you will likely need at least another 2 months of consistent, guided study before you will be able to consistently score 700+. Thankfully, the GMAT is a consistent, predictable Exam, so you CAN train to score at a higher level.

Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

1) What type of study routine have you been following over the last 4 months? How many hours do you typically study each week?
2) What study materials have you used so far?
3) Have you taken any additional CATs/mocks besides this recent one? On what dates (or approximate dates) did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?
4) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

Hi RahulJain293,

Do you also plan to take an official GMAC practice exam to get a more accurate baseline score?

It’s not accurate 😬

PS. Have you finished your preparation or is this the very first test you’ve taken in your life or?

RahulJain293
Hi All,

I took the free Princeton GMAT mock a few days back (with some basic prep that is still underway) and scored 590 (Q41 V30)

Had to guess the last 3 questions in each section given my pace. Also, a lot of RC and SC mistakes overall. Need some advice on how can I take my score to 700+ in the next 2 months. Also not sure how accurate is Princeton mock.

I want to also solidify my math basics. Given the number of topics, I feel the need to revise quite often.

On Prep - Some basic Magoosh videos review and daily practice on Gmat Club for the last 2-3 months. Same with Verbal, using MGMAT and Power score for basic concepts and RC butler for RC questions.

As for the mock - I had taken e-GMAT a few months back and got a 470 (Q36 V19)

Umm not yet.. I was thinking I will use others existing free mocks till I get solid basics and then utilize official gmac mocks.

It seems you’re moving in the right direction. The score is not really very accurate outside of the official test but there’s a meaningful difference. It looks like your verbal scores improved the most and you can get more improvement would from growing your quant score…. You can probably get to 650 with a hike want and the same verbal.

To get to 700+, you need to improve your Quantz to Q 49 and your verbal to V 35 or something like that….

Thanks for reverting!
No, I was unable to write GMAT in Jan given some challenges at work. Plus my rhythm of study too got disrupted. However, I was looking at basic concept videos on Magoosh and using the classic mgmat and power score for sc & cr and the RC butler for practice.

To your questions -
1) What type of study routine have you been following over the last 4 months? How many hours do you typically study each week? it has not been consistent. 1 hour, sometimes 2 on weekdays. Going forward, I plan to be more consistent given next 2 months looks clear at work.
2) What study materials have you used so far? mentioned above. Using Magoosh premium.
3) Have you taken any additional CATs/mocks besides this recent one? On what dates (or approximate dates) did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)? E-gmat back in Nov I guess and scored 470 (Q36 V19) and now few days back Princeton.
4) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to? Plan to apply in Sept R1 now. Targetting European colleges.

Thanks, bb !!

On verbal - any tips for SC? I seem to be super confused and tangled b/w the rules and meaning. I need improvement on CR & RC too but I believe with consistent efforts, I can get there.

On Quant - what can I do differently to get to 48+? On some questions, I get stuck pretty badly even when practicing untimed.

For sentence correction, I would focus on the grammar rules and not obsess about the meaning too much yet. This is my opinion so perhaps someone has a better suggestion. I feel one step at a time is a good approach. So I would focus on the grammar First.

For quant, you can search for how to go from Q 44 to Q 50 though you are not at Q44 yet…. I would look at your mistakes in the questions to stumble you and figure out a solution so they don’t stumble you 😇 (maybe you memorize solutions or smth). Things click differently for diff people.

Hi RahulJain293,

Focusing on the GMAT now - far in advance of this years Round 1 application deadlines - is a smart choice. In that same way, you would likely find it beneficial to speak with an Admissions Expert about your overall profile and plans. Those Experts should be able to answer your Admissions questions and help define the specific areas of your profile that could use some improvement (and the more time that you have to act on that advice, the better). There's a Forum full of those Experts here:

https://gmatclub.com/forum/ask-admissio ... tants-124/

I've sent you a PM with some additional notes and questions.
