Hi Ricardo,

It's good that you were honest about your situation. It sounds like you've already defined some of the areas that you have to work on. The interesting aspect is that some of what you need to 'fix' is more about how you "see" (and respond to) the GMAT than about the content. I agree that you would benefit from consistent guidance - whether that comes from a tutor or some other source is up to you. One of the big factors in that decision is how much money you want to spend.

As far as your pacing problem is concerned, THAT is a discipline issue. Here's something to think about whenever you take a CAT - NO Quant question (not even the 1st one) is worth more than 3 minutes of your time. EVER. If you get 'stuck' on a question and can't make any progress, then you have to be ready to 'dump' the question and move on. There are too many other questions that you need to get to and they are worth more (as a group) than any 1 question that you might find 'tricky.'

You should also work on your 'mechanics' - how you do the physical work on the pad. EVERY question requires some amount of note-taking. You might draw pictures, make tables, do calculations, etc., but you should plan to do EVERYTHING on the pad. By labeling your work and staying organized, you'll actually save LOTS of time, you won't have to continuously re-read and re-read the prompt, and you'll know when you've done enough work to answer the question. The good news is that most of the "work" that you have to do on the GMAT is actually pretty easy; the bad news is that you have to do a lot of it and there's little room for silly mistakes (if your goal is to score at a high level).

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich

Dear All,

This is my first post in this forum, and I am more than excited to apply to bschool but I am not of the Gmat. I would like to get a recommendation of private tutors online (Skype), because I am currently living in Dubai. My background, architect, born raise and educated in Mexico. English is my language, and as you can imagine my quant skills are deplorable because it has been a while without using them. I have taken a test and my score is to my disappointment 470. I really need and have the commitment to improve this score. I have studying on my own using the Manhattan Gmat course, but I feel I need something more personalized to improve drastically. I am planning to apply to top 5 schools, therefore, I need a good score. :)

I appreciate you help in recommending tutors.

Best regards,
Ricardo Carrillo

Hi Ricardo,

Do you benefit most from in-person tutoring? Some folks are fine with online tutors. If that's the case for you, shop around a bit, and take advantage of the free trials offered- you want to pick the course that works for you, your budget and your schedule.

Here's a link to sign up for a 7-day free trial for the Economist GMAT Tutor: https://econgm.at/freetrialoffer. Feel free to PM if you have any questions.

Hi Ricardo,

Many of our tutors (myself included) tutor internationally via Skype and Blackboard. We can build on your work in the MGMAT course and use your CAT data to create a customized plan to move you forward. I took a quick look at your last CAT with us and I can see some definite focus areas, including the most important one of all--timing.

Let me know if you have any questions about our tutors or the tutoring process.
