Two containers of equal capacity are full of a mixture of oil and water. In the first, the ratio of oil to water is 4:7 and in the second it is 7:11. Now the both the mixtures are mixed in a bigger container. What is the resulting ratio of oil to water.
a. 149:247
b. 247: 149
c. 143: 241
d. 241:143

I could not solve this, can anyone help me ? :)

1st mixture - Oil : water = 4:7 => 4/11 parts of oil and 7/11 parts of water.
2nd mixture - Oil : water = 7:11 => 7/18 parts of oil and 11/18 parts of water.
When both are mixed together, you get (4/11+7/18) parts of oil, => (4*18 + 7*11) since 11 is a prime number, so 149 parts of oil in the new mixture. Theres only one answer with 149 as oil part, which should be the answer.

Note: If there were more answer choices showing 149 as oil parts, then you got to work out the part of water as (7*18 + 11*11).

In such questions, focus on either oil or water.

Solution 1: Oil - 4/11
Solution 2: Oil - 7/18
Since they are mixed in equal quantities, let's us assume we mix 1 liter of each mixture to get fraction of oil in the total solution = \((\frac{4}{11} * 1 + \frac{7}{18} *1)/2 = \frac{149}{396}\)
So oil:water = 149:(396 - 149) = 149: 247

let the volume be 77 units each.

Hence, oil = 4/7 * 77 + 7/11 * 77 = 143.

Hence C is clear here.
