Problem with E-gmat verbal test practice  [#permalink]

Hi

As some of you must know, E-gmat recently gave some practice verbal questions to test them. I did about 40 SC qustions and 20 CR questions, following are my observations:

1. SC questions are less GMAT- like and are too time consuming to be solved. Even the reasons for eliminations arent convincing enough in some cases.
2. CR questions have more than 1 correct choices sometimes.

These questions dipped my confidence a bit as my accuracy fell below 60-65%. DId someone else face the same problem? A review of these questions would really help.

Thanks in advance

Hi Advik,

Welcome to GMATCLUB! I have completed about 60% of these questions so I guess I can help. I will write a detailed review about these questions later on but here is a quick feedback.

The new Verbal practice consists a total of 248 questions having 62 SC, 90 CR and 96 RC questions. The new practice questions are definitely slightly more difficult and lengthy than the real GMAT. It is a bit difficult to stick to the recommended 2 minute mark on the CR and 1.5 minute mark on the SC in these questions. However, this is precisely why I feel these questions are absolute must do. I understand why you feel the SC questions are a bit 'off' than the real GMAT as in the officially released questions you can eliminate most of the answers on the basis of grammatical errors, however this is not the case with E-gmat questions as they mainly focus on the meaning of the sentence. There is usually more than one 'grammatically' correct answer, however the incorrect ones do not convey the intended meaning or logically correct meaning of the sentence. These questions are a great way to build a habit of first understanding the intended meaning of the question before moving to the answer choices.

For CR, the questions may be more dense and lengthy, however I feel they are great for practice as they do prepare you for the worst. While I do agree that some of the answers are a bit questionable, they represent <5% of the questions. Most of the questions are great and there is a lot to be learnt from them. Your accuracy may drop in these questions, but try to understand each one of them clearly by reviewing the correct answer and understanding the thought process in answering these questions.

Overall I feel these questions are a great way to build your skills for the real thing.

Hope this helps. All the best!

Just reach out to them and let them know. If you're right, they'll fix any problems you point out. If you aren't, you'll learn something about your approach.

Testing is a really important part of the process (I say this from personal experience). Great questions are usually the result of multiple rounds of review and fine-tuning, and you could help with that, if that was the understanding (feedback in return for additional practice questions).
