If you are talking about R1 this year, there really isn't a ton you can do. These deadlines are creeping up.
This question often comes up around this time, and our best advice is to look at the following:
(a) Engage with the schools on your list. Attend admissions events. Talk to alumni, students, and professors.
(b) Plan or help out with an "event" happening before R1. Even if your contribution isn't major, it'll show effort and contribution.
(c) Ace the application. Write really good essays, put together a stellar CV/resume, and solicit solid recommendations.
If all that feels rushed or you believe your profile is lacking for top schools, you should consider R2 or postponing applying for a year.
