Wow, thanks for the kind words! Volunteering is what I'm about, man. There are some articles about my charity involvement that I can include in my app.

I'd have about 2.25 yrs of exp upon application at R1 or 2.5 at R2. The point that the consultant brought up is that 2 years is fine for some but these are people with front office experience, and I will need more coming from the back office. Is there truth to this? I'd also be happy to apply this year and then reapply next year if things don't turn out... not sure what the stats are like for reapplicants.

Thank you again... awesome advice!

Regards,

YIA

Hey Yoshi,
Well obviously front office is better than back office, but still, you got what you got and in your industry, even in back office 2.25 years should be enough to give it a shot, if you will be ready to go. If you can get the support of your firm, that will be even better!

And even with back office experience, I think Top 10 is right for you,

Best,
:)

Thx again, this definitely clarifies things. If I decide to use a consultant, I will definitely have you at the top of my list. In other words, you the man!

Since you've been so helpful, I have 1 other Q for you:

If I were to delay application by one year for a stint in FP&A at a "sexy' consumer goods company (one that top BSchools would like), would this help or hurt the application?

Hard to say. I'm not sure it would be better or less good. I guess it depends on the specifics of your job description, and whether you have more leadership. It might make your profile a bit "Sexier" though. :) I would say make your choice based on other things like - is this the direction you want to move into? Are the responsibilities and opportunities much better? And the pay?

You lose nothing by waiting one more year, so especially if the first thing is true (this is the direction you want to move towards) it can be good to do this before your MBA.

Hope this helps,

Jon,

I believe that you've answered my question: this is not the direction that I want to go long-term. I want to work in a role in IB or asset management. Unless the sexier job and extra year could appreciably help my chances of getting into a higher-ranked school, it just wouldn't make sense to delay application.

Yeah then, forget about it.
I mean, imagine you will have to write essays explaining why you made this choice one year before you go to Bschool, to which the only answer is "this is my dream industry".... and when it's not, it makes for not-so-fun essay writing.
