My profile is a bit of a mixed bag - low GMAT, low GPA, varied but good work experience, lots of extracurricular activities and unique experience of teaching in rural China for one year. I was recently denied from Vandy w/o an interview (older brother attended Owen MBA and little brother attended undergrad), which worried me greatly about my prospects at other selective schools. I have a very solid and consistent story, but I am just worried that the AdComms will not be able to look past my low overall GPA (especially econ classes), low GMAT, and consider my work background as "job hopping".
ME: 27, White Male, American
1) Brief description of your full-time work experience.
-5 Years: '05-'07: HigherEd Recruiting, '07-'08 CIB Recruiting for Fortune 500 Bank, '08-'09: Biz Dev with boutique ad agency, '09-'10: Teaching English in rural China, '10-Present: Freelance Project Mgmt w/ boutique ad agency. Background is varied, but I've been selling it as more of a journey and that I finally know what I want to do (international CPG brand/product mgmt). Was never fired, always left on my own accord.
2) GMAT.
-620 (39Q, 36V, 5AWA)
3) College info: The name of the college, your GPA or grade average, your major, year of graduation. For any graduate degrees, please provide the same info. If your grades are low, please indicate if there were extenuating circumstances.
-Top Tier Lib Arts college, BA Pysch, C' 2005
-2.97 Cum GPA, 3.6 Major GPA (Psych), 2.8 Quant-related GPA (Intro to Econ, Quant Methods, Pub Fin, Calc).
--GPA dramatically increased after 3rd semester (First 3 semesters=2.41, Last 5 semesters=3.38)
4) Significant college and post-college extra-curricular activities or community service, especially leadership experience.
-Very involved during and after graduation:
--During: Director of student arm of admissions office (tour guide year before that), Co-Chair of committee responsible for allocating funds to all student groups, Big People for Little People Volunteer, Student head of a dorm (assistant student leader year before).
--Post Grad: Current: Board Member of local chapter of nat'l non-profit, Leader of a local program working to educate public school students about college admissions process. Previous: While in China, built a library of 1500 English language books all donated from America - used social media/grass roots marketing to spread the word. Also, President of local alumni chapter (2 Years), Planning Committee for local AIDS Walk (2 Years), volunteer at a children's hospital.
5) Important certifications like CFA, CPA, FSA, or CA.

I think besides Goizuieta, Kenan-Flagler, McCombs (And perhaps even Cox), you should have some chance in getting to the other ones. The above 4 will require some luck. Currently, your GMAT is probably a big hindrance in your admission. To combine a low GPA with a low GMAT, it will probably make the AdComs wince a bit. Furthermore, you haven't displayed much quant-ability (not on GMAT, nor in school), which causes a bit more problem. Anyway, I do think you have a shot at UNC, but you may want to move a bit lower in ranking for safer places.
