Hi
Admissionado,
I plan on applying to MBA programs in one year, giving me 3 years exp at matriculation. Here are my stats:
Undergrad: Fringe-known business school (e.g., Fairfield, Elon) but far from a target.
3.7 GPA, magna cum laude, econ medal for my graduating class
Testing: 740 GMAT (48Q 44V)
W. Ex: Work in back office finance of a top BB (MS/GS) since graduation. Standout in my role with many process improvements and helping to steer projects. Year end review are excellent and I expect recommendations to be top-notch
ECs: Should be a strong point on my application. On a finance charity committee at work and have an ongoing relationship with a local charity that teaches interview, resume, etc skills to underserved job seekers. Organize events with employees from my office to volunteer there and I regularly volunteer as well. Also will begin working with the local branch of a national charity that serves underprivileged children. Have been thinking of applying thru the consortium since I certainly support the mission.
Personal: Guitarist and also very much into fitness & health.
I don't care about rankings. I am interested in working in IB to save up enough money to take care of my parents and then move to nonprofit work after a number of yrs. The work also interests me greatly, although I would also be amenable to corporate development or strategy if I could secure such a position. I'll be applying to a few stretches (Columbia, MIT), but my dream is to get scholarship money from a Columbia/Yale and will also be applying to Georgetown. Add'l schools I'm considering are Duke and Wharton (huge stretch).
My Questions:
For one, I presume it is not a good idea to list my career goals as per the above in my apps. Sandy Kreisberg is of the opinion that one should just say that they want to do consulting (although I have qualms with being disingenuous). What's your take?
I tutor the GMAT on the side for extra $. I could score 770/780 on retake. Could this fundamentally change any of my odds?
Final question from my exhaustive list (sorry abt that): Could it be valuable to take a front office role at a local, smaller firm with less of a name? E.g., banking at a regional firm or something along those lines. If I moved into a front-office role, I'd work an additional year. I have to stay local at least until business school.
Thank you for your time!
PS if my profile seems familiar, you did indeed give me an evaluation a few months ago (and a great one I might add!) I believe that I have a good handle on my chances at this point and am interested in the above questions. I also should be looking for a consultant in a few months for essays, etc.
