Hello all,
This is my first post on GMAT Club. I am looking to get some advice as to where/when to apply to business school given my career path.
1) Demographics
White Male, 25 (soon to be 26), American.
2) Education
BS in Electrical Engineering (3.92 GPA) and Master's in Electrical and Computer Engineering (3.98 GPA) from Fairfield University (5 year master's program) in CT.
I have taken the GMAT 3 times so far... 1st attempt 680 (41Q 42V), 2nd attempt cancelled, 3rd attempt 680 (44q 38v)
3) Work Experience
-1 year at Schneider Electric working as a field service representative. I interned at Schneider prior to being brought onboard at the start of my 5th year at Fairfield.
-3+ years working as a hardware engineer at a small high-tech medical device firm in Boston. Current employer.
4) Extracurriculars
-I am on the planning committee for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's major fundraising walk in my current city, about 3 years now. Have personally raised nearly $2k in donations.
-Co-founded the student chapter of the IEEE while in undergrad.
-Won the social track of the university's business plan competition while in undergrad.
-Presented my master's thesis work at an IEEE symposium as part of the poster session.
5) Goals
- Short term, to become a product / tech manager working in the medical device industry.
- Long term, who knows?! Hoping to figure that out / open some doors with an MBA...getting back into the startup scene as a CTO after cutting my teeth as a product manager at a big firm might be an option. Venture capital always seemed interesting to me.
-Not in love with the Northeast, I want to go south to warmer weather... not sure whether to do that now or post-MBA.
6) Value proposition to programs
-I want to get more involved on the business side of things where I think my experience would be valuable if coupled with business qualifications.
-I have worked extensively with my hands as a field service rep and as a hardware engineer, in both assembly of final products and prototyping.
-I've seen products from inception to sale. I've also been through several med device product development cycles. I know what it demands.
-I have regulated medical device industry experience - ISO13485, FDA regulations etc etc.
7) Schools I'm considering
Boston University, specifically their healthcare focused track
Boston College
Georgia Tech
I don't know what else to consider. and I'm a little discouraged by my GMAT performance. Right at the median for these schools...but I'm not terribly sure I stand out.
8) Timeline
-Fall 2019 might be doable. I'm willing to hold off until Fall 2020 if it guarantees a better outcome.
I very much appreciate everyone's time with this.
