Thank you in advance for providing feedback on my profile. Below are the key highlights from my profile.
- I just finished taking the GMATS (first one... not 100% if I should retake.) I got a 710 (Q45 V41).
- Graduated from UVA's business School (McIntire) in 2009 with a 3.4 GPA (concentration in Finance and International Business). Have some good leadership examples to draw from in undergrad experience but no major leadership "titles"
- Intership experience before I graduated includes working at a start up private equity fund, working at a start up Hedge FoF data analytics company that has since done really well (went from 5 people to 30+)
- Started working in private equity from the LP perspective in a corporate pension fund after undergrad
- 1 year after first job I switched to a well known private equity fund of fund and I work exclusively on secondary transactions (this involves buying LP interests in already constructed portfolios. Very generalist in nature but requires detailed analysis of assets within a portfolio and is heavy on financial modeling.)
I have been advised by some to no go for MBA if I wish to stay in private equity. I am at a platform where I could go to Direct PE or continue to climb the ladder in secondary PE. I am not fully convinced that I should not do an MBA if I want to stay in PE but with that said one motivation for me to get an MBA is to potentially make a jump to public equities. I have found myself investing in small cap public equities as a hobby and believe I would really enjoy this as a career. One thing I regret from my undergrad experience is not being more involved in the student run investment fund and any graduate program I enroll in I would surely make this a top priority.
As you can see I am early days in considering the MBA route. I figured I should knock out the GMAT and then consider if this path is right for me (I didn't want the GMAT to be a reason I did not get my MBA). The questions I have for you are 1) am I a candidate for top schools such as Wharton, HBS, Columbia 2) are there any specific schools you would recommend I consider 3) what are my key application weaknesses and what should I work on (ie should I consider retaking the GMAT)
