GMAT: 740
Age: 26
Work ex: 3 Years by 2013 in a Semiconductor Company and Multiple internships. Lead a team of 3 Engineers on Multiple projects.
Masters in Computer Science: Texas A&M (3.6 GPA and Thesis in Network Security and AI)
Undergrad in Computer Engineering: NIT Surat (GPA 8.6/10 and 4th in class)

Achievements
Winner at TechCrunch Disrupt Hackathon NYC May 2012 (1st Among 92 teams for a contest). Disrupt Hackathon being one of the largest Hackathons in US.
Winner of AT&T Hackathon (1st among 35 teams) March 2012
Third place and Finalist among the 75 teams in US at National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition 2009 and 2010 respectively.
Winner Southwest regionals of Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition
Founder and Chair of a Chapter selected best in the world for recruitment among 500 chapters

Hello Everyone,

I need a frank opinion on whether should I apply for the top 15 univs in US. My profile :

GMAT : 1st attempt in October 2011 : 680; Q 48, V35
2nd attempt in June 2012 : 740; Q 49, V42

Work Ex : 5 yrs experience with Siemens Power Engg Ltd. as a Mechanical Turbine design engineer. I can show a decent (not extravagant) progress and professional achievements. But I do not have any international professional experience or exposure.

Education (Weakest area of my profile) : B.Tech : CGPA : 6.03 on 10. I can show plenty of extracurricular in college.
12 th : 72%; 10th : 70.2%

Other achievements : Member of winning team of the Space settlement design competition at Kennedy Space Centre, Florida in 2004.
Cleared CFA Level-1 in June 2011.
I've filed for a patent.

Pls let me know your frank opinion regarding my chances at the top 15 American univs. Also I would appreciate any suggestions on some good univs across the globe within my reach. I will also be trying for ISB and any suggestions from you guys for ISB would be most appreciated.

Sorry for the late reply. My short term goal is to work on my venture, while in the long term i want to work in VC industry in India.

Hello,

You surely stand a good chance for the programs mentioned by you. A few points :

1) The schools mentioned by you are too competitive (especially considering your academic background), so you are bound to face a stiff competition. You must be able to present your candidature UNIQUE from rest of the peer group with the same academic background. One good point that will help you to differentiate is your team leading role. You should surely share some great team leading stories and believe me, you will come out to be unique.

Second aspect where i see you differentiating yourself is your exposure to entrepreneurship. Do highlight the same, and its good to see that your short term goal is in tandem with your experience.

2) Are you still involved with the EC that you have mentioned ? if not then, i think you have fair chance here to improve your profile. Get involved with an EC that can help you develop some leadership skills, and can also help you share some unique stories.

All applicants who apply to b-schools are smart, but those who PROVE that they are smart get in. So, PROVE that you are SMARTER than others in your stories of essays.
