Hello,
In order to be competitive at a top program, you'll need the following credentials:
- At least 3 years of professional experience. During this time, you want to be able to move up within the organization, take on more responsibility, work with and informally lead teams, etc. Ideally you are working in a corporate business setting as a consultant, marketer, salesperson, banker, etc. Accounting is a tough line because it is not as team oriented as other functions, so be careful about that.
-Strong academic scores + GMAT. You'll need to take the GMAT and ideally score a 700 or above, with an 80th percentile on each section.
- Community leadership - you want to show that you are committed to social causes and your community. Whether this meaning joining the board of a non profit, starting your own, or volunteering to teach kids on weekends, there should be some consistent activity, and ideally leadership, in the community.
-Extracurriculars - you also want to show that you are a leader outside of work and outside of the community. That you are passionate about certain activities (soccer, bungee jumping, whatever!), and that you set an example for others in those areas (soccer coach, bungee jump leader?, ... you get the gist
).
These are general guidelines - there are no hard and fast rules. But, over the next few years, I suggest you concentrate on building your profile to reflect the above and then consider applying to business school at that point.
Good luck,
Mili
