Hi ,
I am an Engineer (Electronics) (Indian , Male) whose chose to move into the IT field .
Work Profile :
I have overall 7 years of workex. I was recently promoted, however my company has no policy of sponsoring higher education. Hence I would have to quit in order pursue my MBA.
I was quite good at coding and software development , however , i realized that I actually was more interested in the domain aspect of things. I was a part time trader(trading from home - Its sort of self learnt) , and this helped me improve my knowledge in the domain of Finance. I thus transitioned from a software developer to a Business Analyst.
I work for a major Investment Bank now and have worked in Singapore for a year (international Experience) . I am currently mentoring 2 junior BAs (MBAs).
GMAT :
I took the gmat and on my first attempt got 710 (V38 , Q 49 , IR 6, AWA 4) . Do you think I need another shot at this ?
I also have a FRM certification.
Extra - Curriculars
- I am an investor and maintain a portfolio of stocks for myself and my family members.
- I play a lot of football for leisure.
- I also play computer games and chess .
I do understand that I dont have the typical/traditional extra curriculars that others expect but is that a problem ?'The traditional extra curriculars such as NGOs and Startups and musical bands either a) Dont interest me or b) I dont have a flair for it.
Dream Schools
INSEAD , London Business School . Although I have kept these as dream schools , I am quite keen on joining these and am willing to wait out a year as well. To be more realistic , I have excluded the typical dream schools of HBS , Stamford etc.
Target Schools
Judge (Cambridge) , Said (Oxford), Yale , Ross , Duke Fuqua , Tepper , Columbia , Stern . These are more of the backup options in case it gets pretty evident that I cannot make it to INSEAD or LBS.
Post B school
I am quite keen on working for an MNC and hope to pursue a general management course . Strategy happens to be one of the majors I intend to take .
So its a bit of a career shift given that I have transitioned from IT to Finance already and now am looking for a General Management role.
Can you please help answer the below questions for me.
a) Do you think I have a shot at the schools mentioned above ? Do you have alternative suggestions which I may have overlooked.
b) Obviously in order to pay off my loans i would like to work in the same country for a few years. Given the immigration environment in UK , do you think UK is still a good bet ? I am not sure if I may be able to land a job or get my visa sponsored in UK.
c) What exactly constitutes extra curriculars in the minds of the adcom ? The ones I have in mind (and those mentioned above) are generally those that I like doing in my spare time.
I may not excel at them but I derive joy out of spending time doing them.
