Hi, I'm currently preparing for GMAT and will apply for deferred MBA programs in April 2021. Interested in UVa Darden, Kellogg, CBS, and Booth.
I really want to know if there are still chances to be admitted with a 2.9 GPA if I can score 740+ at my GMAT.
21-year-old Chinese Male
Education:
Fudan University(ranked 3rd in China), French Language and Literature (GPA:2.9😢)
Professional Experience:
Internships at 2 start-ups as product operation specialist and strategic investment analyst
Internships at 2 venture funds as investment analyst
Summer Platform Product Manager at Alibaba Group (return offer extended)
Founding member of a tech media subscribed by the best Chinese entrepreneurs, such as Yiming Zhang (founder&CEO of Bytedance) and Xing Wang(founder &CEO of Meituan).
Leadership Experience:
Vice President of Fudan Future Career Association, led a team of 15, responsible for social media operation
Leader of a group of 5 to explore the influence of China's land circulation on farmers, Fudan Social Practice Meritorious Winner
Post-MBA goals:
I will start my career at Alibaba Group as a platform product manager ( I don't know if US business schools recognize this company)
short term: In-house strategist at a global tech company's great China or Singapore office
Long term: venture ( entrepreneur or venture capitalist)
Other information:
I will write an additional essay to explain my GPA. Is this an appropriate reason:
I don't want to pursue a career as a translator so I attended the least amount of classes to take near-full-time internships in the venture at tech, and made a great impact.

Hi PatrickC,
You have some really cool stuff in your profile (yes, the schools know Alibaba), but I do worry about the 2.9. With deferred enrollment programs, there can be a lot of emphasis on scores and grades because you don't have significant work experience to speak for you. Why apply now? I think you would be better off building a resume and then applying later on down the line, but also racking up alternative quantitative/business coursework with A's to prove you are ready for school again. It's still going to be tough with that GPA, but at least you'll have hopefully some great work experience and other coursework to balance it by then. Of course, you certainly can try, but these programs are quite competitive. I am not sure about that optional essay...since your academic experience is not that long ago (and in fact currently going on), it will probably be hard to convince them that you will be committed at school in the future if it wasn't a priority now...and they may wonder why you pursued the French major. Sounds tricky.
I am rooting for you either way - best of luck!
