Hello,
I would like to get feedback on my profile
- Male, 26 and French
- Work experience (3 years within a mid-size consultancy group - 1100 consultants) : project management consultant for a R&T project in Airbus (2 years), then promoted within my consultancy group as the branch manager and business development manager of our UK office, comprising 10 consultants (1 year). I should get 2 really good recommendation letters from that side.
- GMAT 680 Q50 V31 taken 2 days ago (that's where I am really annoyed as the verbal I got is my lowest score ever compared to my practice tests...)
- College: Graduates from INSA Toulouse, one of the TOP 3 engineering school (5 years) in France post high schools. Studied 1 year in Mexico with average grades at 95% while in France i'll have to make the GPA calculation but it should be around 3.
- Key Extra-curricular activities:
Entertaining kids in hospital with cancer (as I had one myself when I was a teenager and was out of school for a year...)
Currently training to become a helicopter pilot, Karate (Brown belt) and football since kid - that got stopped for a big time due to my cancer but back on it now
Fluent in Spanish, French, English and advanced in Portuguese
- MBA goal: after working 4 years (by the time of the MBA start date) in the aerospace sector, I want to broaden my horizon and discover new industries. I want also to get into a management position where my multilingual skills would be extremely used.
- Targeted Program: Ideally I would like to go for an MBA in the US but I don't know how high in the ranking I could go for... I had Kellogg or UCLA in mind at least.
My main questions are:
Should I retake the GMAT as I'm sure I could get closer to 720 ?
What US school can I target with my current score and what school could I target with a 720 (if that changes anything to my profile)?
Should I mention the "cancer thing" in my application as it is very personal but on the other hand it shows that I am a fighter?

Thanks for your post. It sounds like all things considered, you have a strong profile for top b-schools, and especially if you do boost the GMAT some which it sounds like is likely within reach.
Your consulting experiences, aerospace industry work, international experiences in the UK & Mexico, extracurricular interests and experiences, and languages all serve to create an interesting profile with a lot to bring to a given MBA classroom.
I would suggest yes, if you are able to, consider re-taking the GMAT since it sounds like a higher score is pretty much within reach, and that will strengthen your position at top 10 schools. Keep in mind that the top 10 or so are so competitive that even well-qualified applicants are rejected, as the school strives to make decisions on each person holistically and based on how they see that person fitting in at their school and then using their MBA in the future...so the essays are so important for those reasons, fyi.
I think you can target Kellogg and UCLA, yes, and also that those as well as other top programs will be more in reach with a higher GMAT as well. In terms of choosing schools, think about what schools will best assist you with your specific career goals, and what you are most looking for in a school-- what geographic region, urban/rural setting, whether it's important to you if a school produces a vast quantity of consultants or investment bankers etc, who recruits there, what is the size of the class, strengths of the curriculum, international diversity, student culture and feel, etc. And you'll want to dig in a bit deeper to your post-MBA goals in order to have a stronger application when you get to that point, fyi... I think you have a good feel for the 'why' behind the next career steps but if you had a better feel for what those steps might be you may have a better chance at success.

Also re: your unfortunate experience with cancer, while I don't know the details of it all (hope you are doing well now!!), it probably depends upon where you think it might come up in the essays. I wouldn't rule it out, but you wouldn't want it to sound forced. If it naturally fits into a story or something you are trying to showcase in the essays, it is likely fine as long as it sounds genuine, but may depend on the context of your essays. If you did decide to work with an admissions consultant or at least have respected colleagues/friends review your essays, feedback would be useful to see if and how it 'works' within your application essays.
), I understand it should not be "forced". But as an example, I saw that Kellogg requested an essay on "the greatest obstacle you've overcome" and I feel that it is genuinely the most difficult thing I had to go through in my life. But again I don't want to dramatize it and move to pity the admission officers. I'll take your advice and I'll get colleagues to review my essays.
