Dear Admission Consultants,
I am planning to apply MBA in 2 years time (2024 Intake). I am targeting schools in US/UK (M7, LBS, Cambridge).
I wish to know: i) my chances at target schools and ii) areas I should improve on.
My Profile:
- Male, Hong Kong, 27 years old
Education:
- Postgrad: Global top 20 b school, Finance, Distinction (GPA: 3.7+)
- Undergrad: UK top 10 /ni, Accounting and Finance, High 2:1 (GPA: 3.6)
GMAT:
- N/A (Believe 740+ is too high for me, target for 700+)
Work Experience:
- Industry: Deals Advisory, Valuation
- Senior Associate under Big 4 accounting firm
- Conducted valuation review, raised concerns and drafted queries on valuation models, e.g., valuation methodologies, assumptions and parameters prepared by valuers
Past Experience:
- Industry: Valuation & Advisory
- Experience working in accounting, valuation and start-up companies, assisting in the development of business services i.e., building models and reporting templates in addition to day to day excel/modelling work
- Worked in over seventy valuation assignments, including business valuation for fundraising and transaction purposes

Hi acry, thanks for writing in. I'd say I don't quite have enough info yet here to predict your chances of success at these top schools, but for the M7 you're generally going to want to be at or above their GMAT averages if at all possible. If you can't quite hit a 740+, do what you can to get close, and consider adding schools beyond the M7. Some great schools that recruit into banking beyond the M7, for example, include Tuck, Cornell and Stern - would recommend you think about adding some of these names. However, one thing that most of these schools will wonder about is why you pursued the Masters in Finance if you were thinking about an MBA. Were you planning a different path or is there a reason you need both? A clear story on your plans, path to date and need for an MBA will be important to communicate. Apart from that, most top schools are looking for leaders, so as you describe your work to date, make sure to highlight your impact and accomplishments, not just your responsibilities and "time served." Since you have some time before you apply, if you don't have strong leadership at work or in extracurriculars, now's a great time to add it!
