I am looking to apply to MBA programs for 2020. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Work experience:
I currently have just over two years of work experience at a F500 industrial company. I have completed a two year, four rotation Finance Leadership Development Program and took a more long term role finance partnering with a business unit with full P&L responsibility. I also interned for this company for an entire year before graduating undergraduate. There has been a steady progression in my work as I have continuously taken on bigger projects with more responsibility. I have received highest achievement honors during annual review multiple times. I will also have another promotion prior to applying (promotion to senior).

I founded a startup on the side a few years ago making sustainable protein bars. I had a team of nutritionists and food scientists. I made it to the semifinals of a large state-wide business plan competition. We had a small F&F round and did everything from product development to product launch. After awhile we went our separate ways however due to failing to reach a larger fit in the market place (the products were very niche).

I am on the board of directors for a local counties Big Brother Big Sisters program. I lead the business development committee. While in college, I founded an entrepreneurship club and business incubator space for students. I was a key member of my university’s club lacrosse team for 3 years, helping win the first ever conference championship. I am also very active in the engagement and inclusion team at work, where I lead a team of 5 people.

Background: American/Male/24

GMAT Score (first mock test): 700, hoping to raise to a 720 on the actual exam.

Undergrad GPA: 3.88/4.00 double major at regional university (finance and accounting)

Goal of MBA: Transition to brand/product management. I have realized that I like general management and having P&L responsibility. I have seen this from the finance partner side and want to transition to the more strategic management side of it. Ideal job would be a product marketing manager position at Microsoft or brand manager at Procter & Gamble.

Target schools:
Northwestern Kellogg
Washington Foster
Indiana Kelley
Michigan Ross
CM Tepper
UNC Kenan-Flager
Duke Fuqua

You've got some great work experience as well as strong experience outside of work (both your extracurriculars as well as your start up experience) so I think you have a good shot at these schools, especially if you can get your GMAT up. That said, you are going to want to refine your goals. Product marketing manager position at a tech firm like Microsoft is very different for from brand manager at a place like Procter & Gamble --and b-schools like to see focus. The more focused your goals are the stronger & clearer your "why MBA" argument can be. You want to think long term as well. Ultimately everything hinges on you long-term (~10 years post-MBA goal) - the ST goal is designed to prep you for that LT goal & the MBA preps you for both. In addition to WHAT you want to do, the adcom also wants to know WHY as well as your VISION for what you plan to change or accomplish in that goal. So definitely do some thinking there. But long story, short - once you firm up your goals & flesh out those details I mentioned I think you will be in a good place!
