Hi,
I am Vyom Mathur, Area Growth Head (Business Development Head) at OYO (Unicorn Startup). I am applying for MBA programs across top 20 B-Schools in the US. Below is a bit about me and my profile. Do let me know if I can add anything here for a better/more well-rounded review of my profile. Thanks!
1. Demographics: Indian Male, Engineer. 28 years old.
2. Education: Vellore Institute Of Technology (2011-2015). GPA: 8.1/10. Major: Electronics & Communication Engineering.
3. GMAT: 700. Q48, V37, IR 8.
4. Work experience:
- 6 years of total work experience in India's top startup industries and proven leadership abilities. Expert in increasing productivity and customer satisfaction while driving revenue and sales. Involved in streamlining procedures while optimising employee talent.
- Currently working in OYO for past 3 years as Area Growth Head, managing a team size of 8 business development managers. Part of the coveted The CEO Club, India & South Asia, awarded to the top 10% from 500 top performers who presented citations for their excellent performance during covid times. Recognised twice in OYO Townhall for significant contribution to business.
- Post undergrad, joined Practo (Asia's top healthcare startup) in an individual contributor sales manager role. Promoted twice in a span of total 3 years of working
at the company. Headed 4 member team in my last role at the firm.
5. ECAs:
- Mentorship at Udayan Shalini Fellowship Programme of Udayan Care NGO. Mentoring 3 young female students belonging to a weaker socio-economic
background.
- In Practo - Started CSR initiative for Delhi branch office. in which conducted a donation drive in association with Uday foundation (NGO) and distributed clothes
worth Rs 11k.
- President, IETE-VIT (Student Chapter) : Planned and designed technical programmes and activities, such as, special lectures, workshops, seminars, symposia,
exhibitions etc. for the benefit of student
members on a regular basis.
- Organised IETE Carnival (Vellore Institute of Technology): To reach out to the 120 children in schools, shelter homes and orphanages and spread awareness
among them.
6. Post MBA Goals:
Short term- I want to transition to a Product Marketing Manager or Product Manager role in technology sector primarily.
Long term - CMO In technology sector.
7. Target Schools: Top 15 B-schools in USA.
8. Other Information:
Planning to retake gmat. Target score 730-740.
9. Specific Questions:
- Given my background and career vision, what are the b-schools i should be targeting and why?
- Is my experience in average range or on a higher side? Will it be detrimental in application review process?

Hi vyiom, you have some great accomplishments but are in a highly competitive category, so I think you are wise to ask this question. When there are so many strong candidates from a particular area, stats can play a heavier role, so I do advise improving your GMAT, because it will make you more competitive vs. your often high scoring peers. While of course you can try for some reaches, a rule of thumb for “over represented” candidates is to target schools where your current GMAT is 20-40 points above the average, so I’d start there. For your other question, six years is fine; when you get closer to 10 years, your experience might suggest more an EMBA or part time program. Best of luck!

Thanks a lot for the feedback Julie. With respect to LBS, Cambridge & Oxford what would be your advise, as the average gmat score is less there ?
