Hello!
I am planning to apply for Fall-16 intake, can you please share your opinions on my profile.
Any suggestions on school selection would be appreciated as well.
Demographics:
25 years old Indian Male
GMAT:
710 (Q49, V37) - intend to re-attempt and try for a higher score
Undergrad:
VNIT - B.Tech (Electronics Communication)
- GPA: 7.75/10
Work Experience:
- As of date, completed 3 years at Oracle India as a Developer. Have worked on projects involving team work (I wasn't a lead) as well as on projects where I was the solo resource. The solo projects weren't of small scale and I was the point of contact for multiple teams across the project.
- Community service - worked with several NGOs for teaching children. Was also a project lead for one such NGO event
Extracurricular:
- Play squash and badminton - but achievements for these activities pre-date the undergrad degree (badminton - played at a National level, squash - country level in Kuwait)
Certifications:
- Passed CFA L1
MBA major:
- Finance/Strategy
Post-MBA goal:
- Finance preferably, else Strategy/Consulting
Target schools:
I'm really not sure of what colleges to consider here. From what I have heard, since my work-exp is in tech domain, getting a job in Finance (even after MBA with specialization in finance) is tough, as companies prefer applicants with prior work exp in the same domain. If that is the case, I am better off specializing in General Management or Strategy Management. Can someone shed light on this?
And regarding the schools, given the above profile, what schools should I target with my GMAT score of 710, for Finance/Strategy major?
Improving your GMAT score will certainly help but I am not sure how well your application, with its intent to get into the financial domain, be perceived without a solid rationale behind the switch. There are people who successfully switch industries and functions post MBA, but the transition is not an easy one to make and is always backed by relevant experiences which propel the applicant's interest in the first place.
At this point, you will not be able to justify your interest and goals, unless you have some relevant experience of the financial industry ( within your workspace or outside of it) There has to be a solid connect between your past, present and future. Its really quite simple- if the schools feel that they will not help you fulfil your career aspirations, they will not accept you. A bit more introspection needed here. We cannot really start looking at colleges without clarity of goals. I am sorry if I have added to your confusion here!
