Hi Folks,
Hi amninder! Thanks for reaching out. I will share my thoughts on your profile below in blue comments.Request you to please evaluate my profile and provide pointers good or bad, weakness or strength.
Qualifications ::
B.Tech in Electrical Engineering from Punjab Technical University 77%
10+2 from CBSE 69%
10 from ICSE 79%
All OK- no deal breakers or game changersWork Experience (Duration, Role, Company, Industry) ::
9+ years experience with 5+ years international experience (US),currently Independent Project Architect on IBM Technologies
The 9+ yrs of work is getting to the upper end of FT MBA programs' sweet spot... does not mean you can't be admitted... just that some schools prefer candidates with a bit LESS work experience. Best way to counter is to show strength and clear focus in career and goals for why MBA.Interested in: Full time MBA, Executive MBA
Geography / Class Start Year preference ::
India/Asia for Classes starting in 2019 or later
What makes my profile unique? ::
Now this may sound a typical IT profile to you. My educational stats are X 78% , XII 69%, Degree 77%. I have worked for close to 6 years in US out of my total 9+ years experience.
The US work experience helps.I have played sports all my life and I have certificates starting from grade 1st all the way till engineering. Just to mention a few: I was part of intra-university college cricket team for 3 years. I have secured bronze and silver in discuss and long jump respectively at our college meet. I have played soccer for ICSE cluster meet in X.
I will be honest- OK? As I think this is the point. Your extra curricular sports are not going to be a game changer. Not that it is not great that you are all sporty and well balanced... but at this point no one cares about your intramural college sports in an MBA program. Sorry but just need to get that out there.Apart from sports I have been active in extra curricular activities too. I helped my school in class 6th by working for Help Age India( an initiative to help the old) . I was part of the core organizing comittee which managed the cultural fest in my college for 2 years. Roughly 90+ colleges from all parts of India took part in it. In my professional life I have played Times Shield Division F cricket for my employer L&T Infotech(I dont have a certificate from them, I may have some emails ), also I have been a part cultural teams at my work We conducted friday funs / picnics and event on all national/festival holidays(I may have some emails ).
I have received professional accolades from my clients and company alike.
Coaching cricket while working may be able to be leveraged if you speak about the leadership aspect of coaching a team- just playing... not such great shakes other than it is good that you have well-balanced interests. But this won't move the meter. At present, I am working as Enterprise Architect Consultant and have work experience in Manufacturing, Banking and Finance, Taxation.
1) As you may have noted, I come from a very common pool of MBA aspirants (Engineers + IT). Given a brief peek into my profile, how do I make my profile lucrative for the adcoms. I am planning to apply for classes starting 2019.My target colleges are IIMs(A in particular), ISB,INSEAD,NUS.
2) I feel my educational grades are average. How much GMAT score will offset that, if it offsets that.
What is your GMAT? This matters for you... a lot...3) How important is community work, given the fact that in India the concept of community work is loosely defined.
I would focus on work accomplishments more than extracurriculars- based on what I see here.4) Are these colleges(IIMs(A in particular), ISB,INSEAD,NUS.) a realistic goal for me or do I need to readjust my goal.
Depending on the GMAT, these can be realistic.5) I have couple of years before I apply , what can I do to make my profile stand out and get that wow factor.
Big results at work, promotions ahead of peers, clear reasons for MBA- which I have not heard yet....6) How much importance will my work experience , especially working in US count. Is 10-12 years experience too much or too less?
7) I am 31 now. Am I too old for a MBA?
You are not too old for an MBA. And you have lots of options with executive MBA programs - which may be the way to go if your GMAT is not 730+. However, there are lots of people 31 in MBA programs but do recognize it is on the older part of the curve.
I would really know your WHY MBA? WHY This school. Consultants can often help a great deal with helping people figure this out.

I wish you the best- and don't be discouraged by any of my comments- I am just trying to help you focus on the right areas- GMAT,
work accomplishments, why MBA and why this school. Your extracurriculars look rather avg- so try to focus more on what you gained from a leadership perspective there- and stay positive. If you want this enough, you will find a way- whether it is exec, online or Full Time!Rgds
