Hi clubuser125,

Thanks for reaching out to us at mbaMission with your profile. I would not be too worried about internal switches. Schools do often have some concern when applicants switch companies several times before applying, but internal moves are more understandable and can even be seen as a positive since you have to be performing well to get such transfers approved! So I think it's completely fine to transfer again before you apply. But you should make sure to explain these moves in your application (usually in the Employment section where you describe your jobs, but you could also use an Optional Essay to explain this).

I see your point about the Tech/AI profile, but you still have that in your background as something that can differentiate your skillset, even if it's not the role you're in at the time you apply. It's also really hard to know exactly who you'll be competing against, so I'd focus on what makes best sense for your career and your happiness too! Like I said, I think you can position the move as a positive for admissions purposes.

Hope that helps!
Kate

Hi,

Thanks for taking the time to review my profile.

Demographic: 27/F/Asian (Chinese)
Education: BA Economics from a Top 20 Public School (3.6/4.0)
GMAT: 700 (Q49 V36 - Plan to retake)

Work Experience:
About 5 years in management concsulting. I've been working for the same company since I graduated from college but I had to transfer from one team(Fianance/M&A in the U.S.) to another(Data Analytics outside the U.S.) because I didn't won the US H1B visa lottery after my OPT period. The reason why I had to swtich from the Finance/M&A team to the Data team was that the Finance/M&A teams are based in the U.S. only and I wanted to stay within the same firm. So my current employer relocated me to a different team in China. It's been about 2 years in the Data team and fortunately, I got 2 promotions within the data team. I got promoted fast to a senior level (right below the manager level). However, even though I did well and got two promotions, I never liked the type of work I do in the current team, and I've always wanted to switch back to my old team (Finance/M&A).

Recently, I've found about a new opportunity within the same firm at the same location and it seems like I can do another transfer if I want to. There's a team in China (same employer) that does work similar to what the Finance/M&A team in the U.S. does. They are not the exact same team but this team in China does something very similar. I'd like to transfer to this team but the thing is I'm planning to apply for MBA programs in round 1 and 2 in 2023. If I transfer now, I'd work for this new team only for 7-8 months before the round 1 deadlines.

I think even if I switch team now, it won't be that difficult to get recommendation letters from either this new team or my current team but I'm worried that swiching team back and forth within the same firm might leave a bad impression to the admissions committees. My post-MBA goal is to work for one of the big strategy consulting firms (MBB), and I believe both what my current team does and this new team does are still relevant. I'd like to transfer to this new team but if doing so hurts my chances of getting into one of the top MBA programs, I rather just stay within the current team.

My questions are
1. Does switching team multiple times within the same firm look bad on my application? If I transer again, it will be Finance M&A (U.S. 1+ years) - Data Analytics (China 3 years) - Finance (China 7-8 months before applying). There will be no title change or no further promotion regardless of which team I choose.
2. In the current Data&Analytics team, I do technology/AI/engineering work as well. If I transfer to the new team, the work is more related to Finance/Economic Analysis. I was told that female applicants who work in tech/AI tend to have a slight advantage. For example, it's not like I get some extra points for working in the tech/AI feild but it helps me differentiate myself from the big pool of "consultants". So I wonder if I'd lose a competitive advantage if I choose finance again over tech/AI.

Thank you.
