Age: 25
Education and Background:
- Born in Pakistan but grew up in Bahrain (till High School)
- Received full scholarship to go to boarding school in Canada
- Went to Uni in the UK (Top 20 in the World)
- Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2nd Class Honours (Lower)) - GPA converts to 3.01 on the WES calculator. Essentially went through a bit of a rough patch in the middle of the degree but rebounded strongly towards the end. Will address this in the optional essay.
Work Experience:
- Global Project Coordinator for large Industrial Automation company in Tokyo. Essentially technical sales to customers (Big Oil and renowned EPC contractors).
- Currently 26 months. Will be 40 months by matriculation.
- Studying Japanese. Will have official intermediate proficiency certification at time of application.
GMAT: Taking on Sunday. Hoping for something in the 700-730 range. Practice test average has been 720.
Target Industry: Tech Consulting at Big 4 (Dream would be BCG but I know it's difficult)
I'm hoping I can leverage my international experience and a strong GMAT (hopefully) to make up for that GPA.
Target Schools: Foster, McDonough, Mccombs, Owen, Mcgill, Rotman
Reach: Goizueta, Johnson
I've not really spoken to anyone about my MBA aspirations so I would love to get your opinion about my profile and my chances at the schools above.

You definitely have a good shot at these schools, and if you can get a GMAT more in the 740 range you can aim even higher in your school selection - you'd have a strong shot at top 15. You've got great international experience and although Indian male engineers are a very overrepresented demographic among b-school applicants, applicants from Pakistan are a bit more rare - and those who do apply are unlikely to have the international experience that you have. Your GPA is on the low end but it sounds like you'll be able to explain that? And strong results at work combined with a strong GMAT score will compensate for the GPA for sure.
Consulting is a more common goal, which can make it a bit harder to differentiate yourself, so it will be critical to show them why consulting is your passion and what exactly you hope to accomplish (i.e. the problems you want to tackle, the opportunities you want to help clients take advantage of, etc).
And then like I said, some strong results at work will be critical as well. You'll ideally want to show some examples of leadership and you'll want to be able to point to the business impact that you were responsible for.
Definitely reach out to us if you'd like any help crafting your story. Assuming some strong essays (and of course the GMAT) I think there's the chance you could shoot even higher in terms of schools. Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately I fell short of my 720 target score so I'm taking the test again in two weeks. I will definitely contact you soon once I have a much clearer picture of what my GMAT score is. For reference I got 690 (V 40; Q 44). I got fixated on solving one problem on Quant which I should have just guessed and moved on but I'm hoping I can rectify that in the next attempt.
