Hello guys, thank you for reading this and I know it's kinda late to ask this question, but I am currently applying and I really don't want to waste my time and money on the programs I have no chance lol.
Here is my profile:
- Chinese male, permanent resident in the US
- Native speaker in Chinese
- 3.5 GPA from a community college, 3.1 GPA from a top 50 UC.
- 700 GMAT (49Q, 35V)
- Internal audit intern for a year at a large broker-dealer, before I was an intern at a financial advising company
- president of 2 clubs in my community college, including some volunteer experience
I know my UC GPA can be a little awkward for top schools, so what are my chances for the schools I chose? I really don't want to spend lots of time on essays and money and get rejected. So here are the schools:
Cornell accounting
ROSS accounting
UVA accounting
Georgetown MiM
UCSD UCI accounting
Can you guys give me some suggestions on my chances of getting into ROSS UVA and Georgetown? Or should I pick some lower-ranking schools instead? I will really appreciate any suggestions!
Hey
JaPoint!
First and foremost, since you are from China, your ethnicity can work in your favor as schools are very particular about breeding diversity in their cohort. Additionally, you come across as an academically strong candidate owing to your GPA that highlights your academic prowess. Furthermore, you have mentioned that you have scored a 700 in your GMAT exam, which is pretty competitive when compared to your target schools. Since you are applying for a Masters in Accounting, your quant score of 49 highlights your excellent analytical aptitude.
Moving on, gaining international exposure through your academics further bolsters your profile by providing you with an opportunity to showcase your broadened horizons and the ability to succeed and adapt to foreign environments.
The extracurricular participation plays an important role in strengthening your applications as B-schools are on the hunt for all-rounder profiles. Seeing your extracurricular activities, I’d say you have varied endeavors on this end, which portrays your proactive attitude! However, to give you a brief idea of how to go about with this, you can elaborate on the clubs and associations you were involved in, the teams you led, certifications you undertook, and most importantly, your volunteering activities along with NGOs. Here you can further talk about the kind of events you organized, duties you performed, and most importantly, highlight your major takeaways were. All in all, varied skills can contribute towards you being a great future leader who would automatically impress the Adcoms.
Now coming on to your work experience, there aren’t a lot of details here. But in lieu of crafting a strong application, you must focus on the quality of your work experience. You haven’t mentioned the company name which makes it difficult for me to comment on the relevancy of their brand name. A big brand name certainly plays a part in strengthening your profile, as you’d be facing competition from applicants from big4 companies. But in case you don’t have such brand names in your profile, you can utilize your application to draw the focus towards the roles and positions you undertook, the teams and projects you led, and the impact you created in those positions as it would help you establish yourself as a strong candidate.
Given your school choices, Cornell, and UVA come under the dream category, which means that you have around 50% chance of acceptance in this school. Meanwhile, Ross, Georgetown, and UCSD UCI fall under the competitive category, which means they have an acceptance rate of 60-70%. While you already have a mixed bunch or dream and competitive schools, here are some more suggestions that you can be looking at:
University of Rochester, USC Marshall, Northwestern, New York University, University of Notre Dam
Even though your profile is pretty decent, it is important to be mindful of the fact that you’d be competing with similar competitive profiles such as yours. This is why I’d suggest you lay emphasis on your admission application as a strong application holds 30% of weightage in the entire admission process and is also the way through which you can highlight your strengths and give apt justifications for your weaknesses to smooth over any flaws in your profile. Moreover, a strong application sets you apart from the rest of the competition, and hence it is imperative that you use this tool in your arsenal to the best of your advantage.
Lastly, since the major chances of your admission depend on the quality of your application, you might want to seek professional help to secure your spot in your target schools.
