Voluntary Examinations CFA Level 1 December 2016 Undertaken

Hi Sana,
I think you've missed a few things to include.

Where were you working from June 2015 to 2017 ?
Which MSc program are you targeting ? Finance, Computer Science, etc ?
Where are you planning to go ? USA?
Which degree/course did you pursue at Symbiosis ?

Please post these details so that I can opine on your profile.

Best,

Hello,

1) I was in college from 2013-2016. The internship was a necessary part of my program at college. After graduating, I was preparing for the CFA level one exam which I could not get through. Then I got a job at MetLife.

2) My programs of interest are: MSc program in Global Strategic Management, MSc in Entrepreneurship and Social Innovation or MSc in International Affairs.

3) The countries on my list are USA, Canada, Paris and Spain.

4) I pursued Bachelors of Business Administration specializing on Accounting, Finance and International Business

Thanks for your reply and kindly advise.

Hi,
Thank you for your brisk response. Good thing about MSc is that work ex is not mandatory in most schools. Although, some schools such as LSE would prefer that you have one. MSc programs are not as competitive to get in too. To answer your question yes you do qualify for such programs. I suggest you shortlist your schools based on your interests and post MSc goals. Look at job opportunities, speak to current and former students and start shortlisting schools. Every major school has an MSc program. You will be able to take advantage of their faculty, alumni network and quality education. Esade has a good program in global strategic mgmt, HEC offers one in sustainability both in paris and montreal, the list is long. Hope this helps.

Hello,

Thanks for your reply. My GPA is a bit on the lower spectrum and I have not given the GMAT yet. Considering this situation, what kind of score should I be achieving in GMAT to further my cause? Moreover, does passing a CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) provide some boost to my application? Would admission committees give more preference?

Thanks,
Sana

Did you calculate your GPA or does Symbiosis offer grades in GPA format ? A good guide to GPA conversion is on the link below :

Scoring a high GMAT will help you with your low GPA. As a general rule of thumb you should score about 1-20 points higher than the class average of a particular school. Hence, you need to look at your target schools to understand what will be a good GMAT score for you. There are a lot of schools that do not require a GMAT for MSc programs. Passing a CFA would've helped if you were interested in MS in Finance. But since that's not your goal I dont think it'll help that much. There are MBA programs where you can pursue both a CFA and an MBA. Check out Concordia's MBA with CFA program.

Your overall profile is pretty decent.
Being an Indian applicant, your international experience is an asset .
You seem to have been an active participant in a variety of extra-curricular activities,so that works in your favor too. Remember, the adcoms look for impact rather than just participation so make sure that you highlight your learnings and impact that you created through those activities.

Your CGPA is a cause of concern, especially if you want to target Canada as the country has a lot of weightage on academic performance.
You can compensate for it by highlighting your other strengths like your leadership capabilities and work experience.
Also, aim for a 700+ GMAT score . Since your GPA is average, a strong GMAT score will be instrumental in convincing the selection panel regarding your academic acumen.
Taking up a voluntary CFA exam shows your clarity in taking up a finance career. Try clearing it in the next go as it will earn you some brownie points.
I could have helped you more had you mentioned your target list of B-Schools along with your preferred countries.
If you can give more details on that, I can give you a realistic idea on your selection chances.
