Profile evaluation for top 10 MBA school

Question

Hello,

Can you please tell me if my profile would be suitable for admission to one of the top 10 US MBA schools. My details are below:

29, Indian, Male 
Graduation in Economics from top 10 college in India, scored a second division (very competitive with only 20% of class securing a first division) 
PG diploma in management from a 2nd tier institute in India (considered equivalent to an MBA in India, top 20% rank) 
CFA charterholder from the CFA institute, USA 
FRM charterholder from GARP, USA 
GMAT - 730 (Q:50, V:38)

Have been working as a research analyst at HSBC Bangalore for the last 4 years. I have enjoyed excellent growth in the company, by being promoted to the position of a manager within 2 years when the normal duration to be promoted is 3 years. Have won numerous awards at the company including one which is awarded to the 100 best performers in a year among the 40,000+ employees in the group worldwide. Have worked on and led projects which involved contributions from analysts in at least 3 different continents.

Aside from HSBC, I, along with 2 partners, have launched a financial consultancy, where we perform a strategic allocation for our clients portfolios. This doesn't conflict with my role at HSBC because I am not recommending stocks to my clients, but instead advising my clients how best to allocate funds among different asset classes. Due to my work commitments at HSBC, my participation is presently low, but after my MBA, I will be more actively involved in this. We started this firm last year and have a few clients, but looking to grow both within India and abroad.

Previous to HSBC, I have worked with Toyota as an Internal Auditor, and with an NGO focused on environment preservation, again as a research analyst.

I am also involved with an NGO here in Bangalore where I teach poor children English and Math. Some of the extra-curricular activities that I am involved in is the local motorsports society in Bangalore, and regular participation in corporate tournaments. My extra-curriculars during college were quite strong since I was the head representative of my students society as well as the editor of the college newsletter.

Can you please let me know whether my profile would be good enough to get admission in one of the top 10 US business schools. My preference is for one of the top finance schools since I will be continuing my work in this field after the MBA.

Hello!

In short, yes, I think you are competitive at a top 10 MBA program. You have a stellar academic profile and a very strong leadership profile both during college and thereafter. Your accelerated promotion and evident leadership at HSBC will go a long way, as will your entrepreneurial experience and success. You have strong college extracurriculars and remain actively engaged outside of work in the community and in extracurricular activities. I think you will have a good chance! That said, I always recommend rounding out your list with some safety schools, as you never know what will happen and a lot depends on how well you can execute your application.

Undergrad – Bcom (NM one of the top 5 colleges in India)
Chartered Accountant and candidate for CFA Level 2
Work Experience -

October 2018 - managing finance at well known a series B e-commerce start up.

April 2017 to September 2018
A) Currently working with the shared services of one of the top 5 VC firms (from number of investments being made), VC fund size approx. INR 600 crores (USD 90m). Fund 3 in process 
- Tenure – Since April 2017
- Handling the entire deal execution process from deal negotiation, conducting due diligence, to closure of the deal, working with portfolio companies for implementation of internal processes, attending board meetings of portfolio companies on behalf of the fund, etc.
B) PwC: 
- Tenure – Since Jan 2013- March 2017
- Handling tax structuring, advisory and compliances for globally mobile individuals.
- Streamlined the tax structuring for a technology conglomerate to enable yearly savings of approximately USD 1 million in taxes
- Independently handling execution of yearly compliances for clients with a team of 3 people
- Handling tax assessments and representations before government authorities for HNIs, and structuring of their taxes
- Awarded the PwC Experience Award for taking initiative and implementation of PAN India software to enable reduction in time, efficiency and standardization to the process.
C) Proprietary CA firm
- Tenure – Since 2008 – 2013 – internship; thereafter for 6mths as an employee
- Handling audit and tax assignments

D) Have also done audit assignments on freelance basis of large Indian Public sector banks

Extra-curriculum
- Painting and sketching (don’t have any formal contests, or anything), and Astrology (I am quite keen on learning it and taking some formal online lessons)

Post MBA goals
To work in a VC as an Investment Analyst; and thereafter in some years start my own business

Primary reason for an MBA
To gain international exposure and make a shift to the VC / PE space

Please do let me know of my chances at top 15 MBA schools...Anything I can do to improve my profile...I am working on community service part..

Hi there pqrtus, Thanks for posting. You have a lot of strong ingredients from what I can see thus far, and of course schools are interested in qualified female applicants, so with your PwC experience and exposure to the VC world plus CFA and respectable GMAT, you've shown that you are prepared for business school (I assume your grades are solid too). With starting a new role, be sure to think carefully about who will do your recommendations. Not sure what timeframe you are thinking of applying. Yes looks like the weakness thus far is potentially EC/community... do brainstorm anything you got involved in even in college as that is a small plus, and additional more recent community experience is also a plus.
