Hi Jon,
Thanks for your quick and honest response. Appreciate the same.
A bit of info on my business: We are importers of ball bearings(TIMKEN/NTN/SKF). Our main clientele include Govt owned Power Plants and private owned power plants.
We have 8 offices in India with a staff strength of 25-30 people. The group turnover is approx 12Million USD. We are expanding our product range to include ancillary products such as cutting tools, seals, grease etc in order to be a one stop solution for our clients.

I have a couple of questions:
1. Will a higher Gmat score increase my chances in the top 25 schools or so?If yes, will a retake(being my fourth) have a negative impact?
2. Are anderson/Ross/Darden/Cornell/Tepper realistic targets ?
3. What schools according to you should I target?
4. Will not joining my family business post mba have a negative impact?

Regards,
Anuj

Hey Anuj,
Happy to help. Ball bearings eh? It's funny, I helped someone years ago whose family was also in the ball bearings business (but from a different region of the world). Anyhow the family business size is small to moderate, so although it's good and solid, it's not going to inordinately tip the scales. What could help is things like if they see that under your leadership the company has doubled in size.

Let's get on to your questions:
1. Of course. A fourth retake doesn't hurt really, but it should also be worthwhile. There's no point retaking in just the hopes that you will get a better score. everybody reaches a plateau somewhere. Although if you feel like you have another 30 points in you, it can be quite worthwhile. I'd suggest you take a look at a long post I wrote specifically about this and Indian candidates: to-retake-or-not-to-retake-that-is-the-question-indian-153716.html

2. Mostly, no. For a balanced strategy you can and should apply to one or two of them as dream schools, and with amazing applications I have seen great things happen. but you also need to cover yourself by applying to schools at which you would be competitive, and one or two safe schools as well.

3. Like I wrote above, I think schools listed 20-50 are more your range. I'd suggest taking a look t the list, thinking a bit about which schools would be interesting for you, and coming back with a short list from which we can work further.

4. Not necessarily. If you don't have family business goals, then at least I would suggest staying in a similar industry, but it's totally cool if you want to move to a big multinational and gain experience in manufacturing etc. The most important thing is that your goals be reasonable and logical.

Hope this helps Anuj,
Best,
Jon
