Hi there!
First of all, congrats on the 90 point increase, that's a huge achievement!
If you want to target those schools, MIT, Yale, and Columbia in particular, I would give it one more shot. Your score is still below their averages, and given that your GPA is also on the low side (though the fact that it was Engineering helps), a 700+ score could help your chances a lot.
Given the time remaining though, you'll need to parallel process application work with the GMAT retake, perhaps going ahead and starting on essay writing, etc. now and then retaking just before the R2 deadlines. Since you scored slightly higher on practice test, I think it's worth one more attempt. Schools will consider your highest so it can't hurt.
I'm also curious about your career goal story...corporate strategy to software engineering to social impact is not a very typical path! Hopefully you can show a connection between the three and a demonstrated interest in social impact. Otherwise, that career goal could be seen as a little risky given how few jobs there are still in the field. So just keep that in mind too as you start working on your essays.
Good luck!

Good morning!
I am currently stuck at a crossroad whether to retake my GMAT and see my chances with my profile given it's an unusual one.
First GMAT: 600 (Q44 V28 IR5 AWA6)
Second GMAT: 690 (Q49 V34 IR8 AWA6)
After struggling with my first GMAT, I narrowed down all the things I didn't know and focused on those leading to a 90 point increase. A slight disappointment because I scored 710 and 700 for my practice tests before the second exam. Now I'm not sure if I should retake it because limited time (I want to apply Round 2) and I'm not sure if I can bump it up even more. Will the 8 in IR and 6 in AWA mitigate my low verbal score?
I am planning to apply to Columbia, MIT, Yale, Duke, and Cornell, with interests in social entrepreneurship and impact. I went to a top engineering school for undergrad (GPA 3.1), worked in corporate strategy for 2 years for a Fortune 500 company, and now a software engineer.
Any advice/tips will be appreciated!
