I just started the GMAT study and MBA application process. I'm planning to take a GMAT prep class, since I took my first practice test yesterday and got a pretty depressing score. I guessed on about half of the quant questions though since I was so rusty. I'm 25, female, and work in consulting for a large firm. I have 4 years of work experience, mainly in government/defense contracting and just went into consulting last year. I had a 3.5 GPA in college, with a BA International Politics & French from a mid-ranked state school. I plan to stay in consulting after getting my MBA and want to work for one of the strategy shops (MBB, Kearney). I plan to go part time (weekend program) and work while completing my MBA. However, if I can receive a scholarship, I'm open to going to class full time. My school ist below, ranked from reach to safety. What GMAT will I need and what are my chances otherwise at these schools?

there are a number of variables that make a judgment difficult. i do think, however, that with your grades and experience (number of years along with quality as a consultant), you're viable at a top 10 program, such as Kellogg or Chicago. It's certainly ambitious and you're realistic to call it a stretch, but it's not out of the question with a 3.5 and 4 years of quality work experience. for the GMAT, obviously higher is better. at 710+, you're safe. and between 650 to 700, there are add'l elements the adcom will need to see in order to prove you can handle the coursework. i've written this article you might find helpful: https://www.thefirstread.com/should-i-retake-the-gmat/
you should bear in mind, however, that there are many add'l elements you need to consider just as seriously as the GMAT, such as career focus, letters of reco, interview prep, etc. your best bet is to balance your work across all dimensions of the application vs. trying to score a "perfect GMAT." the outcome to a balanced approach such as this is almost always more positive than muscling a few extra points from the GMAT.
