Hi Jon,
I will be writing my GMAT next month, however I have already initiated my applications. My targeted score is 750 - 770, with bottomline at 730 - 740.
I have an engineering degree from a college ranked continuously in top 5 in New Delhi. However, my percentage score is 66%. In my defense, the highest department score itself is in moderate 70's.
Work experience : 3 years
ECA & Leadership Roles: I was the part of core team, that handled the cultural events in my university. Handled a budget of 50,000 USD. I am also associated with NGO's working at grassroot level in Delhi. Have worked with Greenpeace too. Have been fairly active here, have mentioned only the first few points here.
Had an HEC Business School admit for Master in Finance last year, which I had to forego due to family commitments.
I intend to apply to 8 out of the top 20 schools in USA ( Breakup: 3 in top 10, 5 in top 10-20 and University of Toronto and York, Canada.
Dream colleges for me will be Booth and Kellogg.
What would you suggest? My GMAT is on September 8th, and I will apply in first round of applications.

- 1 year 3 months with Tata Consultancy Services: Was awarded at TCS for being one of the brightest new joiners that batch, award presented out of 800 colleagues.
Worked as a Technical Anlayst, for a German Client, where I would translate business requirements into technical requirements.
2 years with a European Telecom Firm ( Market share estimated at 5%) : Worked as a Business Analyst for 2 years. Worked on Requirement Gathering, Stakeholder management, typical IT consulting profile.
Currently, I am freelancing with 2 small enterprises on how to set up IT systems for automation and cost reduction.

Hello there good sir!
So, first of all good luck on your GMAT! As you know it's a bit hard to evaluate your profile without a GMAT, but let's assume for argument's sake a 730. I think that even with a 730 Top 10 schools will be tough for you - as In Indian/IT with okay grades (I do understand that the top person in your department got a 70, and you should tell them this, but it's hard to get this across when Top 10 schools see and accept candidates with 80, 85s…) from a non-IIT program. The 10-25 range is where you should concentrate most of your energies (which is your plan! So that's great!).
I do like the volunteer work and Greenpeace stuff. that should help strengthen your profile. And you should see what else you have in your profile that might give you a bit of pizzazz. Because right now, it's not the grades that are "problematic" but that outside the Greenpeace thing - IT/Tata/etc. can come across to the AdCom as somewhat standard. which is of course exactly what you do NOT want!
PS - If your GMAT is Sept 8th, you likely won't make round one for more than 2,3 schools. Keep it real! And make sure you work those application to the end - till they are the best they can be!

So, first question, how much difference would a score of 750 make from 730? Is it something that can bump my entry into top 10?
My plan is to secure admission in the best school that might be available for me, irrespective of the ranking. Top 10 would obviously make more sense than the next 10 !
I will write the GMAT on the September 6th, and I completely realize the timeline I will have to deal with . Perhaps, that is the reason why I am focusing sometime daily into shortlisting, application content daily.
Anyway, just to add some perspective to my application, kindly consider these achievements as well.
- I was the associate editor for the TCS monthly magazine, working with a team of 6 writers.
- After the consulting stint at the european telecom firm, I started a social platform for university students to prepare them for interviews, better communicative abilities and writing skills. This was recently registered when we started maintaining our account books, and the website is under development. However, we make use of the social network, where a community of around 5000 members actively follow us. This also happens to be my long term plan, I intend to return back to India and pick this project again.
- The consulting for SMEs includes three firms as of now, ranging from publication house to a real estate firm (W/F = 500) . These projects aim at reducing leakages in the firms in terms of absenteeism, time management and logistics. The plan is to move past traditional IT consulting and foray into end - to - end capacity and firm management.
Would you be available for a consult, on telephone or email, or is there a place where I can sign up. I would like to work with someone experienced on my applications before I finalize my schools.

). Even if you got an 800, if the rest of the profile has weaknesses, it will still have those weaknesses. Obviously it will be better the higher you get, but qualitatively the difference between 730 and 750 is not a difference of order, although it will give you an edge.
