Hi, I am trying to make a career change from law to finance, here is my background information. Grateful if you could help me evaluate my profile and advise on target schools:
1) I am a Chinese banking and finance lawyer and have worked in a TOP3 Chinese law firms for the last four years. Most projects I have worked on in the past are cross-border listing, project finance, international finance. Our clients are top investment banks, such as Morgan Stanley, Deutsche Bank, Euroclear, HSBC etc, Chinese state owned companies, such as ICBC, SINOPEC. Because the international nature of my work, I have worked with different law firms all over the world, US, UK, Canada, Cayman, BVI, Hong Kong, Singapore etc. There are lot of cases where we are the lead counsel of a deal, I have to manage several attorneys in our firm and several law firms from different jurisdictions.
2) GMAT : 730 (Q51,V38,IR,5)
3) College info: top10 Chinese law school and a law master from Munich University. My GPA is 3.4.
4) Your target programs: I understand that top MBA programs can be really cut-throat, so I think I will set my expectation around top 15. Reach: Columbia, NYU, Northwestern, Michigan, Yale, Duke, UCLA
5) round and application cycle, R1 2014-2015
6) Post MBA goal, find employment in the US in Finance Industry.

Thanks for your post. You have a lot going for you in your profile to start with.
Strengths:
-law degree/experience... can be a positive or a challenge, depending upon how you are able to tell your story and explain the WHY behind the MBA and your next career steps. But overall a smaller applicant group with a different perspective to add to the class.
-solid work experience; variety of work with well known companies/clients
-international exposure
-finance/investment banking exposure
-experience managing others
-GMAT is solid
Potential challenges:
-right now one of the biggest challenges is refining your goals... making sure you show you have a clear vision of the how and why of the MBA and your post-MBA steps. Think about detailing what you view as your shorter and longer term post-MBA goals. Ensure your story makes sense... how your past life and experiences have influenced you and your future goals... how the MBA will take you from one to the other and what skills will carry over, etc. You want to show that you know what you're getting into; you know the MBA is right for you, and you have a feel for your next steps.
-not sure of any other activities/involvement/community experience? Would enhance your profile.

Thank you very much for your evaluation. I just got my GMAT official report, my AWA is only 4. How important is the AWA, should I retake the GMAT just because of the AWA. Thank you for your input.
but usually that won't be a deal breaker if the rest is of your profile is solid.
